Preview Read Question Test
3
Look over your reading assignment. Get a sense of what it’s about, how it’s organized, where it’s going, and how long it is. Read the first paragraph or first page. Read the last paragraph or last page. If there is a summary, read that. Scan charts, tables, and pictures.
4
Read headings and titles. Often in bold, italics, or all caps. If there are no headings, read the first sentence of each paragraph. Read the questions at the end of the chapter. Read handouts from the teacher. All of these things reveal what your teacher and the author of the book intend for you to retain as you read.
5
Read one paragraph at a time. On a 3x5 card, write at least one question about that paragraph. On the back, write the answer to your question. On the front, in the upper left corner, write the page number and paragraph. The first paragraph on each page is #1.

Some paragraphs have enough information for two or more questions. If so, use one card for each question and answer. Reading this way takes effort and energy! However, the rewards are worth the effort.
9
Test yourself using your question and answer cards. When you answer a question correctly, put that card in a pile to your right. Put those you miss in a pile to your left. Keep working through your cards until they’re all on your right. Shuffle the stack and go through it again. Continue until you have mastered the information.
10
You learn more. Practicing with flashcards, instead of rereading the chapters, makes studying for tests faster and much easier. Learning takes less time overall, even though PRQT takes more time than just reading an assignment straight through. PRQT is less confusing than other reading techniques.
11
Take notes on how to use the PRQT method. For a reading assignment this week in one of your classes, use the PRQT method. Be ready to turn in your cards next week in advisory. When your teacher asks you to study for a test on the chapter you read using PRQT, use the cards to study for the test. Report to your advisory class whether it made studying easier.
