The Importance of Good Health
Health is the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well- being. Health is dynamic, or subject to constant change. Your health at any moment is a point on the health continuum, which ranges from a high level of health to premature death.

Promoting your health The decisions you make each day affect your health These are some of the habits, or lifestyle factors that promote good health:

Get 8 to t10 hrs of sleep each night
Start each day with a healthy breakfast Eat a variety of nutritious foods each day Be physically active for at least 20 minutes, 3 or more days each week. Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. Abstain from sexual activity before marriage. Manage stress Maintain positive relationships

C. A key to your wellness is prevention, practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury.

D. Health education, the providing of health information to help people make healthy choices, is important because it gives people the tools to become and stay healthy. E. Healthy People 2010 is nationwide health promotion and disease- prevention plan designed to serve as a guide for improving the health of all people in the United States. It focuses on healthy individuals, families, and communities.

Your Health Triangle The 3 elements of health- physical, mental/emotional, and social are connected like the sides of a triangle. Your physical health has to do with how well your body functions. Your feelings about yourself, how well you meet the demands of daily life, and your ability to process information are all important parts of your mental/emotional health. Your social health involves the way you get along with others. All three sides of your health triangle are equally important.

Influences on your Health
Your health is influenced by your heredity, all the traits that were biologically passed on to you from you parents. Your health is influenced by your environment, the sum of your surroundings.

C. Your health is influenced by your attitude, the way you view a situation.
D. Your health is also influenced by you behavior. You have a great deal of control over your behavior. E. Your health is influenced by the media, the various methods of communication information, including radio, television, film, newspapers, magazines, books, and the Internet. F. Your health is also influenced by advances in technology.

Understanding Health Risks
Risk behaviors are actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others. The first step in becoming responsible for your health is to increase your awareness of risk behaviors in your life. Most teens are avoiding risks by engaging in these behaviors:

Safety belts Not smoking cigarettes No use of alcohol No drugs Participating in physical activity 3 or more days a week.

D. Cumulative risks are related risks that increase in effect with each added risk. The more risk behaviors you participate in, the more likely you are to experience negative consequences at some point.

Abstaining from Risk Behaviors
Abstinence is avoiding harmful behaviors, including the use of tobacco, alcohol, other drugs, and sexual activity before marriage. Practicing abstinence is the only way to avoid the consequences of some of the most serious risk behaviors.

Worrying about unplanned pregnancy
C. When you abstain from sexual activity, you avoid many negative consequences, including these: Worrying about unplanned pregnancy Difficult decisions associated with unplanned pregnancy, such as being a single parent Sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV Emotional problems that accompany sexual activity, such as guilt, regret, and rejection.

B. When you abstain from using tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs, you avoid many negative consequences, including these: Addiction Serious harm to the body and even death Social isolation Legal consequences
