1 Communities in the United States come in all shapes and sizes. In the following two poems, the people live in different communities, but they share MUCH in common. Think about what we’ve read so far about communities on pages 6 through 9. What do you predict these characters will have in common?

2  Describe what you see in the illustration on pages 10 -11 and the photo on page 13. What kinds of communities do you see? THINK AND SEARCH: What types of things were going on in the community of the first poem?

3 THINK AND SEARCH: What types of activities/things were going on in poem #2? INFER: What are the narrator’s attitudes towards the communities where they live? Use examples from the story to support your answer.

4  Make a poster showing what makes YOUR COMMUNITY you live in special to you. OR  Write a poem about YOUR COMMUNITY. Tell about the people and things you see everyday.
