What is it??

It is... an opening, or rupture, in the Earth's surface or crust, which allows hot melted rock, volcanic ash and gases to escape from below the surface.

Vesuvio Vesuvio is a mountain shape volcano in the Gulf of Naples it is not currently erupting, it is sleeping Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in AD 79 that destroyed of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. They were never rebuilt. The towns' locations were rediscovered in the 18th century.

Explosions From 79 B. C. up to 1944 There has been no eruption since 1944, and none of the post-79 eruptions were as large or destructive as the Pompeian one.

Other Volcanoes The two other major active volcanoes in Italy, Etna and Stromboli, are located on the islands of Sicily and Stromboli respectively.
