Shawn Corey Carter was born 12/4/1969 in Brooklyn, New York, USA. Raised in Brooklyn, Carter was a school friend of the Notorious B.I.G. He started releasing records in the late 1980s. In 1990, he appeared on records by his close friend Jaz ("The Originators") and Original Flavor. Jay-Z set up his own Roc-A-Fella label in 1996. His debut, Reasonable Doubt, went on to produce the US number 50 pop single. The album attracted fans with a mixture of hard- hitting lyrics and rhymes, shown by the collaboration with Notorious B.I.G. on "Brooklyn's Finest".

Empire State of Mind This is my favorite song because it has a great rhythm and a catchy beat. This song has the best flow of all Jay-z songs. “I used to cop in Harlem, all of my Dominicano's right there up on Broadway, pull me back to that McDonald's Took it to my stashbox, 560 State St. catch me in the kitchen like a Simmons with them Pastry's Cruisin' down 8th St., off white Lexus drivin' so slow, but BK is from Texas Me, I'm out that Bed-Stuy, home of that boy Biggie”
