Recycling in Germany

20 years ago Germany invented a special system in order to recycle raw materials and prevent environmental pollution

In the world the garbage is nowhere separated as well as in Germany. Today several households have four tonnes - yellow for packaging, grey for the rest garbage, brown for biowaste and a blue one for waste paper

The „Recyclinghof “ Every other garbage you want to get rid of can be brought to a certain place called “Recyclinghof”

„ Bottle deposit “ You pay a special deposit ( 8-25cents per bottle) whenever you buy drinks in bottles or cans You get the money back if you bring the bottles and cans back to the shop

There are containers for any kind of glass or clothes in central places of the cities

What happens with the collected materials? 75% of the new glass bottles are made out of recycled glass Less than half of the energy and resources are needed to produce paper out of waste paper Old clothes are used for paper production or cleaning cloths

Example: Recycling of collected plastic bottles and packagings cutting and cleaning drying and melting Foils, beverage cases, window boxes, pipes forming new products

Near our school there is a „Garbage incineration plant“ The waste that is burned in this plant produces electricity

FACTS The separate collection of packaging material in Germany has begun 20 years ago Today nearly 80 percent of all packaging gets recycled 250 000 people work and earn money in the recycling market
