2 Goals and Assumptions Maintaining the core values of the research library while expanding horizons in response to a rapidly changing environment Adjusting to the print-to-digital transition: leveraging digital resources while retaining the traditional strengths of legacy collections Achieving economies of scale whenever possible to maximize limited resources Adapting our libraries to the new information landscape and patrons’ demands

4 UC-wide Discussion: The Next Generation of Technical Services Next-generation Melvyl, union catalog of the University of California libraries Mass digitization: Google Books and HathiTrust Bringing hidden collections to light Managing the life-cycle of born-digital & other collections Making technical services a system-wide operation

5 Sharing Language Expertise in System-wide Processing of Collections in Non-Roman Languages Reducing redundant cataloging activities by establishing centers of specialization under a cost- sharing model, including shared cataloging of East Asian e-resources Establishing UC-wide standards and practices, such as automated transliteration, online cataloging training, shelf-ready services UC-wide efforts to reduce cataloging backlogs

6 Sharing Language Expertise in System-wide Processing of Collections in Non-Roman Languages Integrating East Asian technical services with the parent library’s technical services is not currently being contemplated Functional partitioning will shrink budgets, reduce staff & resources, & generally weaken East Asian Library services

8 UC-wide Initiative: Shared Print Program Broaden and deepen UC library collections in the service of research, teaching, patient care & public services Offer economies not available through traditional models of collection development Preserve important cultural assets by ensuring persistence over time

9 UC-wide Initiative: Digital Preservation & Data Curation UC3, the UC Curation Center Bringing together the expertise and resources of the University to provide high-quality, cost- effective solutions that will enable campus constituencies—museums, libraries, archives, academic departments—to manage, curate, & preserve their information resources

10 UC-wide Initiative: Digital Preservation & Data Curation Merritt, a Data Repository A repository service from UC3 that lets the UC community manage, archive, and share digital content, with digital asset management tools & permanent data storage & preservation

11 The East Asian Library’s Strategic Position Deliver quality collections and services in spite of the reduced workforce and budget Increase efficiency Advocate holistic librarianship; avoid further reducing staff resources through functional partitioning Come out from behind the desk
