2 Contents 1 2 3 4 Research Indicates…
How to Incorporate Collaborative Learning 2 How Learning Styles & Collaborative Learning Correlate 3 Incorporating Technology for the 21st Century Learner 4

3 According to Research from the University of North Carolina, USC Berkley, and the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), students who are engaged in the classroom through collaborative learning and the integration of technology have an overall increase in graduation rates of 9% No More Chalk and Talk!

4 Why is Collaborative Learning so Important?
Research has proven that Collaborative Learning: Engages students beyond reading, listening, and note-taking Increases critical thinking skills Fuels long-term memory retention Enhances quick concept absorption Promotes educational ownership Builds communication competencies

5 Research Based Rule The Rule of 10 & 2 Maximum: 10 Minutes of Lecture
Minimum: 2 Minutes of Collaboration

6 Research Indicates Learning is optimized when students are actively engaged in the process. Research on instruction shows that most of us remember: 10% of what we read 20% of what we hear 30% of what we see 50% of what we both see and hear 70% of what we have discussed with others 80% of what we have experienced personally 95% of what we teach someone else

7 Collaborative Activity
How long have I been lecturing? Take out your Gray sheet…

8 What will you remember the most?

11 Types of Learning Styles
There are many different types of learning inventories, but three main learning styles: Visual Audio Tactile/Kinesthetic By integrating collaborative learning, you will automatically be appealing to different learning styles.

12 Tips for Different Learning Styles
Pink Sheet Auditory: Record a Summary of What you have learned (Group Discussions: The role of the scribe) Visual: Take notes, make pictures of concepts, create graphs, and create charts (Group Concept Maps: Colored Markers and a white board) Kinesthetic/Tactile: Use models, real objects, create using technology, and materials that can be touched and moved. (Small Groups: Acting out a Concept)

13 Hand-Outs Different Types of Learning Style Inventories
Yellow: 2 Copies- Basic Inventory Orange and Purple: More in-depth Inventories Know your own learning style: Complete one of the Yellow sheets and discuss with your Neighbor. Do you feel the inventory is correct? Why/Not?
