f AAC meeting, August 6-8, 2007 - Shiltsev5 Main points of the Report: Muon Collider Muon Collider: In contrast to the electron and hadron colliders, demonstrating the viability of a muon collider will require many steps: exploration of various possible overall schemes, a specialized proton driver, various targeting and capture and phase rotation schemes, various possible six-dimensional (6D) ionization cooling configurations, various methods of acceleration to high energy of the cooled muons, storage ring designs and detector configurations. Each of these steps may involve development of more than one technology. Given the many unknowns, it is not possible to predict with confidence when these explorations could be complete. In a technically limited schedule, the overall result would be paced by the 6D cooling exploration. Significant trial of the current ideas could be in hand on the five-to-ten year time scale.

f AAC meeting, August 6-8, 2007 - Shiltsev6 Main points of the Report (cont.) Current Activities: international MERIT experiment at CERN and MICE at RAL Neutrino Factory and Muon Collider Collaboration (NFMCC) Muon Collider Task Force at Fermilab Schedule and Cost: significant evaluation of cooling and other feasibility items might be carried out in approximately five to seven years given support for a technically limited schedule. A rough comparison with the U.S. ILC development intensity prior to the ITRP decision would indicate the need for a minimum of $20M annually and 100 FTE of appropriate skills. It would be very advantageous to have more than one muon test facility where cooling and the associated technologies can be carried out…

f AAC meeting, August 6-8, 2007 - Shiltsev23 NFMCC-MCTF Protocol 1. The NFMCC and its members are invited to participate in the MCTF program. 2. If the mutually agreed upon activities require MCTF resources, the resources, milestones and deliverables would be defined by an MOU between Fermilab and the NFMCC. 3. NFMCC institutions receiving support for MCTF activities would do so within the framework of the NFMCC (i.e., through the process defined in point 2). 4. Institutions participating in the MCTF that are not presently part of the NFMCC would be encouraged to join the NFMCC if this seems appropriate (decided by mutual discussion between the MCTF and NFMCC leadership). It seems natural that the MCTF manages those activities that require Fermilab to play a significant role as a host laboratory, and the NFMCC manage those activities with an international character We desire and expect NFMCC participation in MCTF managed R&D. To facilitate this, we have formulated a protocol to follow:
