Simile and Metaphors Both are comparisons, except similes usually use like or as (can use than) to compare. Metaphors compare things by saying something is something.

Guess Who? (2 minutes) The river was as quiet as a mouse. The crown of flowers were more beautiful than one made of diamonds. She is a powerful lioness. After she dances, we all feel we have seen heaven.

Nature and Me (Only a Little Planet) p. 4 We are going to read a poem today that describes the planet. Please write down all the describing words you see as you read. Following that take one minute and write about one thing in nature you can identify with your personality. Example: A character trait of my personality is peaceful. One thing in nature that I see is peaceful is a stream or breeches. (1 min)

Now take that one thing and compare yourself to it using figurative language (3 minutes) Example: I am peaceful, like a gently, flowing creek, passing through the green forest, as the birds sing sweetly their song of content.

Group Time! (12 minutes) Now, you will make a two to three stanza poem, each stanza should be five lines, with your group using the comparisons you made. Add to your poem at least two senses. Please see example poster on the board.
