List and define 5 unknown words from this story. List 3 precise or vivid words from the text. Edgar Allan Poe is a very well-known American author. What do you know about him? Identify and analyze lines that show how the speaker’s attitude changes toward the dead Lenore. How does the author’s mood affect the beginning of the poem? What would be an example of symbolism in this poem? What do you know about the headless horseman? What do you think happened to Crane? Justify your answer. As the reader, could you trace a glimpse of foreshadowing in this suspenseful story? Explain your answer fully. How is listening to a radio show different from a watching a television program? How is it the same? Why does the repeated sight of the hitchhiker give Adams “the willies?” Explain how the author uses both flashback and foreshadowing in this text. Analysis: Comparing Texts The Glencoe textbook asks “What keeps you glued to the pages of a mystery, a horror story, or a spooky tale?” The text goes on to explain that, “Writers of these scary stories are experts in the art of suspense.” Use evidence from the text to prove which story you believe is the most suspenseful.
