Example 1 Ice cream sundaes at Gary’s Creamery come in 5 flavors with 4 possible toppings. How many different sundaes can be made with one flavor of ice cream and one topping? Multiply the number of options for ice cream 5 ⋅ 4 = 20 with the number of options for toppings. There are a total of 20 possible sundaes.

Example 2 How many possible different license plates can be issued in Oregon? Would it be OK for 2 different cars to have the same license plate? Why are there license plates on all cars? What are they used for? 10 x 10 x 10 x 26 x 26 x 26 = 17,576,000

Oregon doesn’t use the letters I or O because they might be mistaken for 1 & zero. How many license plates are possible if you can’t use I or O as letters? 10 x 10 x 10 x 24 x 24 x 24 = 13,824,000

Example 3 What is the probability of winning the school raffle where the winning number is made up of 3 digits from 0 to 9 chosen at random if the numbers can repeat? Find the total number of possible outcomes. 10 ⋅ 10 ⋅ 10 = 1000 There is one winning number How many winners are there? The probability of winning is … =0.001=0.1 %
