Life and Times Born in Connecticut on October 16, 1758 Attended Yale University 1774 and then became a teacher Taught in a one-room schoolhouse Textbooks were poor Began writing his own in 1783

First book was A Grammatical Institute of the English Language It was called the Blue-backed Speller Most popular book of the times Used for 100 years Married Rebecca Greenleaf and had eight children Lived in New Haven, Connecticut Helped to start Amherst College

In 1801 he began writing first American dictionary. His dictionary used American spellings not English. American words not in English dictionaries were added. Finished in 1828 (27 years later) Had 70,000 words He worked to Americanize the English language Died in 1843 at the age of 85
