SRI & MAP TESTING PRESENTER- MRS. ROBINSON SCHOLASTIC READING INVENTORY™ (SRI) is a research-based, computer-adaptive reading assessment program for students in Grades K–12 that measures reading comprehension on the Lexile Framework ® for Reading. The most powerful feature of the SRI is its ability to administer fast and reliable low-stakes assessment to inform instruction and make accurate placement recommendations. Aligned to state tests, SRI helps educators forecast student achievement to those important goals
8
What is the Scholastic Reading Inventory and what does it measure? The Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) is a computer based reading assessment system. Students spend approximately 20-30 minutes 3 to 4 times a year reading passages and responding to questions. Test items include fiction, non-fiction and informational text. Passages require students to make inferences, draw conclusions, and demonstrate use of vocabulary knowledge in context; among other higher level thinking skills. How are SRI scores expressed? What is a Lexile? The score which students receive is expressed in Lexile numbers. Lexile is a unit of measurement for reading comprehension falling between 200 and 1700. Currently grades 2 and 4 have SRI pass rates. This means that students must be at a certain Lexile level in order to be promoted to the next grade. Second graders need at minimum a 300 Lexile and 4 th graders need a 605 for promotion.
9
How will teachers use this information? SRI is a tool that school staff can use to provide information regarding a student’s current reading level, to monitor student progress, and to assist staff in planning for instruction. Lexile measures can also be used by teachers to understand the discrepancy between student comprehension skills and text difficulty. This information can help teachers provide differentiated and targeted skills instruction. How can this information be helpful to parents? SRI data can also assist parents in working with their children to select appropriate text for independent reading. Matching students to texts at appropriate levels helps to increase their confidence, competence, and control over the reading process. How is a Lexile number calculated? The Lexile formula does not take into account the maturity of the concepts covered in the book. The formula basically measures the length of sentences and complexity and frequency of words. It is strongly suggested that parents preview material and discuss reading material. For example, The adult book, The Firm written by John Grisham, and the children’s book, Charlotte ’s Web by E.B. White, both have a Lexile of 680.
10
Where can I find more information about Lexiles? Additional information about the Lexile Measurement System can be found at www.lexile.com.www.lexile.com Where can I find books at my child’s Lexile level? Many book companies currently include Lexile numbers in their catalogues or on their websites. If you are shopping at a book store, ask for assistance in locating books. You can find more information at the following sites: www.lexile.com http://bookwizard.scholastic.com www.bn.com www.lexile.com http://bookwizard.scholastic.com www.bn.com

What is MAP? Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) is a state-aligned computerized adaptive assessment program that provides educators with the information they need to improve teaching and learning and make student-focused, data-driven decisions. In Savannnah/Chatham County students in grades two through five are tested three times per year in math. Educators use the growth and achievement data from MAP to develop targeted instructional strategies and to plan school improvement.
12
MAP: Is not an accountability test Generates test questions based on student responses Reports student results in RIT scores Gives immediate results Is aligned to CCGPPS curriculum standards Measures growth over time Provides information used to target individual instruction
13
MAP Created by educators for educators, MAP assessments provide detailed, actionable data about where each child is on their unique learning path. Because student engagement is essential to any testing experience, NWEA works with educators to create test items that interest children and help to capture detail about what they know and what they’re ready to learn. It’s information teachers can use in the classroom to help every child, every day. Adapting the Test to the Student MAP dynamically adapts to a student’s responses – as they take the test. Answer a question correctly and the test presents a more challenging item Miss a question, and MAP offers a simpler item In this way, the test narrows in on a student’s learning level, engaging them with content that allows them to succeed.

WHAT IS A PARENT INVOLVEMENT FACILITATOR? A Parent Involvement Facilitator coordinates activities to enhance parent participation in a two-way meaningful communication with the school regarding academic learning and other school activities. This is designed to help parents play an integral part in assisting their child's learning by being actively involved in their child's education at school, and understanding their roles as full partners in their child's education.
