Fermilab Master Plan In order to help define and best use all laboratory resources to most effectively and efficiently meet Fermilab’s Plan for Discovery, the laboratory is developing a Fermilab Campus Master Plan (FCMP) for the next 20 years. The document will guide the development of modern, productive, and efficient laboratory facilities that will enable the laboratory to fulfill its mission of advancing humankind’s understanding of matter and energy by providing facilities for particle physicists from across the country and around the globe. The FCMP will build on the laboratory’s rich scientific and aesthetic heritage to develop capable, flexible, energy efficient facilities appropriate for 21st century science. Executive summary

Fermilab Master Plan Plan Objectives The Fermilab Campus Master Plan is a focused plan for the next 10 years, while providing a brief outlook into a 20 year time horizon of the laboratory. The building priorities for the first 10 years are: Modernization : Replacement of inadequate and antiquated fabrication, assembly and machining facilities dating back to the beginning of the laboratory. Development of office, technical, lab and meeting spaces that are flexible, provide efficient us of space and energy, and meet the needs of current and future engineers, scientists and other users. Consolidation: Replacement of the current scattered, obsolete and inefficient network of support buildings with modern consolidated buildings that meet the needs of the next era of science.
5
Fermilab Master Plan Centralization: Development of a vision for a vibrant and interconnected central campus region anchored by Wilson Hall. New consolidated buildings will be planned in proximity to Wilson Hall and other major central region buildings. Re-imagined vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle pathways will be designed to connect these buildings. Aesthetic Enhancement: Development of principles that will guide the next era of the planning and design of the Fermilab Campus and buildings. Also addressed will be guidance regarding landscaped design, signage and way finding. Sustainability: Development of building designs and site features that meet DOE guiding principles for sustainability. Plan Objectives
6
Fermilab Master Plan A second feature of the plan will be the documentation of the Fermilab Campus and its facilities and systems as they related to the current, near-term and long term scientific program. The study will also briefly address known facility needs beyond the next 10 years, provide a baseline for the yearly update of the master planning documents. Executive Summary
7
Fermilab Master Plan The Fermilab Campus Master Plan (FCMP) project consists of the creation of a site-wide master plan to guide the development of the physical facility. The FCMP will propose new buildings, site elements, and utility systems for the Fermilab campus over a time period fro the present to the 2020’s and beyond, with a sharper focus on the next 10 years. The purpose of the FCMP is to facilitate the efficient and effective fulfillment of the laboratory’s scientific mission. Brief Description of the Project
8
Fermilab Master Plan The Plan will create a forward looking framework for designing in detail support facilities and removing existing, obsolete facilities. The plan will integrate with (but not include the design of) currently understood concepts for planned experimental facilities to be developed during the time period. Additionally, the plan will document know utility system deficiencies and propose solutions that will integrate the new and existing experimental facilities, as well as existing and proposed support facilities. Brief Description of the Project
9
Fermilab Master Plan The outcome and benefits of the FCMP will be the creation of document that will assist Fermilab Management, the Department of Energy, and other stakeholders in delineating the scope and design concepts for building construction, site layout and utility system improvements. It will reside alongside the Plan for Discovery, and the plans for the major experiment construction initiatives as a tool to define budget and funding plans for the defined time horizon. Plan Outcomes and Benefits
10
Fermilab Master Plan Project 1/ I ndustrial Facilities Consolidation The Fermilab Technical Division is experiencing a severe lack of high quality, premium industrial space, In addition, it has been a longstanding necessity for the laboratory to consolidate antiquated machine shop facilities into modern advanced manufacturing environments. This proposed Industrial facility will replace a network of over many scattered and obsolete and inadequate buildings, dating to the beginning era of the laboratory Many of these buildings were existing single family residences converted for lab use. Others are pre-engineered pole buildings. In order to continue to maintain our competitive edge in, and to gain momentum in, the current and future highly competitive technology driven world, we must have the facility described as we move forward.
11
Fermilab Master Plan Project 2/ Integrated Engineering Research Building The purpose of the Integrated Engineering Research Center is to consolidate PPD, AD assembly space, lab space, meeting space, and office space into a new building in proximity to Wilson Hall. The design and location of the building will promote integration of the diverse engineering disciplines Office space in the building will accommodate engineers and technicians that support the HEP research program at Fermilab. Meeting space will be designed to encourage interdisciplinary communication among engineers and scientists. Lab space will be used for detector R&D, prototyping, and to operate test stands before and during experiment operations. Assembly space will be used to build and test detector systems, and will be used for systems integration prior to installation in an experimental hall.
12
Fermilab Master Plan Project 3/ Wilson Hall 2.0 Upgrade of the existing 40 plus year old building. Secure its place as the hub of Fermilab for the next era of science. Perform a sustainable building conversion; windows, mechanical and plumbing systems. Plan for more flexible, easily adaptable and changeable office construction system. Meet ADA requirements throughout.
13
Fermilab Master Plan Project 4 / Central Campus Gaol of developing a vibrant and interconnected central campus region anchored by Wilson Hall. Study location of other projects with relation to their proximity Wilson hall as part of an integrated plan Study parking structures or other means to bring parking closer to buildings Study vehicular circulation in the region with a view towards re-imagined vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle ways will be designed to connect areas in the central region
