Emotions with plural subjects ~ nous, vous, ils, elles ~
2
Emotions with plural subjects Singular subjects: – Je, tu, il, elle Plural subjects: – Nous, vous, ils, elles We learned that the spelling of the emotion is affected by the gender of the subject. It is also affected by the number. We have to add something to the end of each emotion for plural subjects.
3
Let’s use “angry” as an example We already know: I am angry Je suis fâché (if you’re male) Je suis fâchée (if you’re female) You (s) are angry Tu es fâché (if you’re talking to a male) Tu es fâchée (if you’re talking to a female) He is angry Il est fâché She is angry Elle est fâchée
4
Let’s use “angry” as an example Now let’s learn the other 4 subjects: We are angry Nous sommes fâchés (if “we” are a co-ed or all-male group) Nous sommes fâchées (if “we” are an all-female group) You (pl) are angry Vous êtes fâchés (if “you” are a co-ed or all-male group) Vous êtes fâchées (if “we” are an all-female group) They (m) are angry Ils sont fâchés They (f) are angry Elles sont fâchées
5
So what is the rule? Add an “s” to the end of plural subjects that are co-ed or all-male. Add an “es” to the end of plural subjects that are all-female Exception: Masc. emotions that end in “x” (heureux, jaloux, nerveux), STAY THE SAME. – Ex: They (m) are jealous Ils sont jaloux
6
Examples We are happy (assume co-ed) – Nous sommes heureux They (f) are embarassed – Elles sont embarassées You (pl) are worried – Co-ed or all-male: Vous êtes inquiets – All-female: Vous êtes inquiètes
7
Negative Plural Examples We are not nervous (assume co-ed) – Nous ne sommes pas neurveux They (f) are jealous – Elles ne sont pas jalouses You (pl) are sad – Vous êtes tristes
