The Duomo di Milano is a Gothic Cathedral of great dimensions. It is the second largest Roman Catholic Cathedral in the world, after the Cathedral in Seville, Spain. (St. Peter’s in Rome is a Basilica and not a Cathedral). It is 157 meters high and it can shelter 40,000 people.

It is said that the Basilica of San Ambrosio was constructed on this site at the beginning of the fifth century. In the year 836 another basilica was built next to it. When fire damaged both buildings in 1075, these were replaced by the Duomo.

The Duomo is a temple of large dimensions, with five naves, and two aisles on each of the sides, with at least forty pillars crossed by a transept followed by the chorus and the apse. The naves are 45 meters high, This brick construction is covered with marble.

The roofs (open to the public), permit a close perspective of some sculptures of great quality. A forest of pinnacles and spires can be observed from here. The highest point of the temple is the "The Madonnina", a work in golden copper, of Giuseppe Perego. It was inaugurated in 1774.
