2 WHY US? WHY NOW? Our Mission : Every public school student will graduate from high school globally competitive for work or post-secondary education and prepared for life in the 21st Century. Today’s learners have grown up in a digital world. They have cell phones, computers, multi-dimensional video entertainment, iPods, the Internet, and they have never seen a TV without a remote control. Our children are hyper- communicators, goal planners, multi-taskers, experts at figuring out and using technology, and they are active learners.

7 Care Carry in provided case at all times with both straps over both shoulders Charge nightly Visit Help Desk at first sign of trouble (don’t put it off) Do not walk around with MacBook open Do not leave unattended (charger and laptop) Avoid eating and drinking near MacBook Careful when using around young children and pets Remember the device is Property of Poplar Bluff School District and is entrusted to the student to benefit their education

8 INTERNET SAFETY IN THE SCHOOLS Student Training Students receive training on the use of the laptop Students receive training on Internet safety

9 TEACHER DIRECTED USE OF THE INTERNET Students use the Internet only for educational research and activities Student will use the MacBook to design and deliver content Teachers monitor student Internet use in class Students are not allowed “free time” to surf the Internet

10 INTERNET SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS 1. Never give out personal information 2. Never use parents’ credit card online 3. Never share passwords with anyone 4. Never arrange a face-to-face meeting 5. Don’t open e-mail if you don’t know who sent it 6. Don’t click on banner adds or pop-up ads on websites 7. Never use bad language or send threatening e-mail

11 SCHOOL INTERNET FILTERING  Filtering software installed on district web server  Filters web sites based on content-keywords  Can block specific web sites upon request

12 SUGGESTED GUIDELINES FOR HOME INTERNET USE  Parents should set and enforce rules for home Internet use  Have computer in a common room (not in the bedroom with the door closed!)  Time limit on Internet, instant messaging, social networking sites, online gaming, etc.  Parents should ask and know student’s personal username and password  There is no content filtering available away from the school’s network

13 HOME INTERNET SAFETY Suggestions Concerning e-mail  Parents should have access to students’ e-mail  Threatening e-mail should never be sent  Attachments bring danger of viruses  Spam=Junk mail=Don’t reply

14 HOME INTERNET SAFETY Suggestions for Instant Messaging  Different clients: AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Instant Messenger, Microsoft Instant Messenger, iChat  Can hide true identity with a screen name (dancergirl1996)  Sessions can be saved and printed

15 HOME INTERNET SAFETY Suggestions for Parents re: Social Networking Sites  Various: Facebook, MySpace, Gmail Buzz, Twitter, MeeBo, BeBo, BlackPlanet, Buzznet, Habbo, imeem, Jaiku, MiGente, MyChurch, Windows Live Space, Topix, Xanga, and new ones appear regularly Purpose:  Online communities of people who share interests and activities, and provide a variety of ways to interact

16 HOME INTERNET SAFETY Suggestions for Parents re: Web-surfing  Banner/pop-up ads: clicking on them places a “cookie” on your computer, allowing websites to track your movements (from Wal-mart to phishing scams!)  Never give out personal information, even seemingly innocent and unimportant info  Never make online purchases without parent permission/supervision-- make sure website is secure (https:) before entering credit card information

19 ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY/ CODE OF CONDUCT Students will make available all messages or files upon administrator or teacher request Just like a textbook or a locker, Poplar Bluff Schools owns the laptop. Students are permitted to use it for educational advancement Administrators have capability to remotely view student computers

20 ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY/ CODE OF CONDUCT  Use Appropriate Language When searching the web When sending messages, i.e. don’t use all CAPS When blogging/using message boards Cyber Bullying If you suspect Cyber Bullying, REPORT IT !

22 ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY/ CODE OF CONDUCT  Prohibited activities: Bypassing the filter Using another student’s username or password Sharing passwords Downloading or installing Tampering with the hardware

23 ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY CODE OF CONDUCT Personal Communications Prohibited at School:  Chat rooms  Instant messaging  Social networking sites  Hosting personal web pages  *Unless school-approved, teacher supervised

24 ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY/ CODE OF CONDUCT Inappropriate Materials: Materials that are unacceptable in a school setting are defined as anything:  pornographic  obscene  graphically violent  vulgar ***** *This includes music, sounds, recorded language, videos, pictures, or printed materials

25 ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY/ CODE OF CONDUCT Keeping Your Laptop Damage Free: Do not leave a laptop unattended. Keep pets, food, drink, and babies away from laptopKeep pets, food, drink, and babies away from laptop. Laptop may not be used during school lunch. Do not leave your laptop visible inside a vehicle (lock in trunk).

26 INSURANCE  The insurance fee is $45 per year.  If your child is a participant of the Federal Meal Program, the fee is $25 per year.  The fee is payable when the computer is assigned to the student.  A payment plan can be set up if a student is unable to pay the full fee upfront. See your child’s principal for details.  Gallagher/ Bassett accepts credit card payments

27 INSURANCE Poplar Bluff R-1 will provide a protective cover and backpack for the laptop’s protection. This cover and backpack must be used at ALL times.

28 INSURANCE Damage resulting in a broken screen or keyboard is subject to a $50 deductible for the first occurrence, and $100 for any subsequent occurrences’ in the calendar year. Lost or Stolen Laptops will be subject to a $100 deductible for the first occurrence, and $200 for a second occurrence. Any future occurrences will require a plan arranged by the building principal. The parent is responsible for filing any necessary police reports.

29 INSURANCE WILL NOT COVER...  Any issue when the Apple serial numbers have been removed.  Loaning your laptop or charger to another student.  Damage or altercations to the protective laptop cover. Replacement cost for the cover is $20.

30 INSURANCE WILL NOT COVER...  Damage caused by use with non-Apple product.  Damage caused by flood, fire, or earthquake.  Damage caused by operating the product outside the permitted or intended uses described by Apple

31 INSURANCE WILL NOT COVER... Willful and deliberate damages to the computers will cause Poplar Bluff R-1 School District to charge the student/parent the full cost of the replacement or repairs of the computer. Such cases may be turned over to the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

32 INSURANCE WILL NOT COVER...  Damage caused by service performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.  Damage to a part or product that has been modified to alter functionality or capability without the written permission of Apple.  Damage that is cosmetic, including, but not limited to scratches or dents
