A simple way to delete the length of a sentence and make it direct at the same time is to frequently use the active voice. Whereas sentences using passive voice tend to be wordy or indecisive, sentences utilizing active voice make the technical document more immediate and concise.

EXAMPLES (Original) The optimization of multiple response problems in the Taguchi method is achieved by the proposed procedure. (Revised) The proposed procedure optimizes multiple response problems in the Taguchi method.

Passive voice is preferred when the doer of the action is unknown or unimportant (or less important than the action itself). Consider the following examples: A trackball is used to move the position of the cursor around the screen. Space is needed to move a trackball.
