Case Study – Op Sumatra Assist 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami Fourth largest earthquake of recent times 275 000 people killed 141 000 homes destroyed 600 000 people lost their livelihood Scale of response unprecedented - civilian and military agencies from many nations responded

Case Study – Op Sumatra Assist Defence Role Provided humanitarian assistance at request of Indonesian Government. Defence assistance was part of a multi-agency whole-of- government effort.

Case Study – Op Sumatra Assist Assistance included Engineering teams Medical teams HMAS KANIMBLA (Amphibious Landing Platform) Helicopters, engineering equipment, reconstruction stores

Case Study – Op Sumatra Assist Outcomes included: 3700 medical treatments (AVH) 70 aero-medical evacuations 1200 tonnes of humanitarian aid distributed by air 1700 large drains cleared 1000m of road cleared
