New Orleans was founded by the French in 1718 as Nouvelle-Orléans and Louisiana became a French Colony. In 1763, Louisiana was returned to Spanish Rule.

8. History continued. Under Spanish rule, New Orleans suffered two disastrous fires. The first, the great New Orleans fire of 1788, destroyed 856 buildings on good Friday, March 21. The second destroyed 212 buildings in 1794.
