Early New Orleans Louisiana was first discovered by Spanish explorers Alvárez Piñeda in 1519, Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca in 1528, and once again by Hernando de Soto in 1541. New Orleans was founded by the French in 1718 as Nouvelle-Orléans and Louisiana became a French Colony. In 1763, Louisiana was returned to Spanish Rule.

History continued. Under Spanish rule, New Orleans suffered two disastrous fires. The first, the great New Orleans fire of 1788, destroyed 856 buildings on good Friday, March 21. The second destroyed 212 buildings in 1794.

Napoleon sold Louisiana to the United States in 1803 for 15 million dollars.

New Orleans New Orleans became a state in 1812. The battle of New Orleans, fought by Andrew Jackson and pirate Jean Lafitte, defeated the British forces on the Mississippi River.

Early New Orleans New Orleans was an agricultural state, farming mainly cotton and sugarcane. The Mississippi river made New Orleans the largest port in the United States.

New Orleans Unfortunately, because of the agriculture, New Orleans became the largest slave port in the US. The largest slave rebellion in US history took place in New Orleans. 125 slaves revolted. 2 white slave owners where killed, 95 slaves where hung or decapitated.
