Mother often left Louis with grandmother At age 11 sent to juvenile home for shooting a gun in the air at a New Year’s Eve party Fell in love with music when he received instruction on cornet at New Orleans Home for Colored Waifs

Miles Davis Played professionally while still in high school Played with Dizzy Gillespie & Charlie Parker Moved to NYC when he was 18 to attend Institute of Musical Art, which is now called Julliard School Dropped out after a year to become a full-time musician
