3
4. Elijah and Ahaziah.. 2 Kings 1 5. Elijah’s departure from the earth. 2 Kings 2:8
4
And James says by inspiration of God… Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are… A Man like we are… The whole setting of James 5:13-20 is to encourage us by reminding us that others have been like us.
5
If you are suffering…Pray 1. James 5:13 “Is any among you aflicted, Let him pray. “ Pray for ourselves..” God speaks so much about the need for Us to pray. I Thess. 5:17 Matt. 6:5-15
6
2. Is any ‘merry’ (cheerful) James 5:13 Is any merry, let him sing psalms” Singing is indicative of a good, happy Heart. Phil. 4:4 Eph. 5:19
7
3. Is any sick? James 5:14 Is any sick among you? Let HIM call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. The sick is to do the calling…call for the Elders.
8
2. These elders were to anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. What they are doing is in keeping with the ‘authority of Jesus Christ”. There are some things we do not know anything about…obviously whatever Would soothe or help the sick would be done. The Elders are to pray for the sick.
9
James 5:15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sin, they shall be forgiven him. A brother can find help from God during the time of his sickness.
10
A man like us.. 1. A man like us can get sick. Tells him what he is to do. 2. A man like us can sin. Tells him what to do. 3. A man like us needs converting when we sin. Tells brethren what to do!
11
James 5:16 16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Acknowledge your sins!. 2 Sam. 12:13 “I have sinned…” I John 1:9 “If we confess our sins…” Praying for one another is so important…and to the sick, it is essential!
12
James 5:17 17 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
13
Elijah was a man like us He prayed that it not rain…did not rain for 3 l/2 years. Afterwards, he prayed..and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.!! What did God do about Elijah’s prayer? He answered it! How was he like us? A man like us..’in the flesh…”
14
19 Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; 20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.
15
Why should brethren who are in error be converted! 1. Brethren can err. 2. A brother converts him. 3. Result: He shall save a soul from death and hide a multitude of sin!
16
A Man like us in the flesh.. 1. Can get sick. He needs to pray for himself. And He needs to call for the Elders to pray for Him. 2. Can sin. Rom. 3:23; Rom. 6:23; Isa. 59:1-2 3. A brother who turns away from God needs to be converted. He needs to be converted from the error of his way!.
17
A Man Like Us…We are men like him! When you read about examples of people like Elijah…and know that he was a man Like us…(Rom. 15:4) We can make it…. We can live faithfully to God. No matter what happens in this life For us, Being Faithful to God is our final Answer. Rev. 2:10; I Cor. 15:58…
