5  Merit-Based Aid - aid given to students strictly on the basis of merit. May be based on: ◦ Academic record ◦ Special characteristics ◦ Skills or talents ◦ Involvement  Does not have to be repaid; may be renewable from year to year.  Need-Based Aid - aid awarded to students on the basis of financial need. Re-evaluated each year as financial situations may change.

10  Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) prior to the college’s deadline  To ensure maximum consideration for federal, state, and institutional aid, check information from each college to determine: ◦ Required application materials ◦ Application deadlines

11  Must have a valid Social Security Number  May not be in default on a federal student loan  May not owe repayment of a federal grant  Must be making satisfactory academic progress as defined by the school

12  Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an eligible program of study  Must be pursuing a degree, certificate, or other recognized credential  Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen  Must be registered with Selective Service

17 Cost of Attendance (COA) – Expected Family Contribution (EFC) = Financial Need

18  Basis of financial aid package  EFC is determined by a federal formula that calculates need via the FAFSA  EFC & Financial Need are guidelines used by schools to determine a financial aid package  EFC not necessarily equal to the out-of- pocket cost of the family
