Conferences in the MGA Environment Panel of Conference Organizers (POCO) Seattle, WA 24-26 July 2008 Joe Lillie Vice President – Member and Geographic Activities

Member and Geographic Activities Vision Ensure Quality Member Opportunities for Continuous Engagement Mission Inspire, Enable, Empower and Engage Members of IEEE Guiding Principles The Member is IEEE and IEEE is the Member Membership is a core value of IEEE Members shape IEEE’s future Members collaborate to create IEEE’s future IEEE enhances members’ future

 Focus on the Member - continuous engagement throughout the lifecycle –Develop an IEEE-wide Member Strategy –Member data acquisition, management and protection; relevant products/services and coordinated communications  Geographic Unit Experience – efforts already initiated to engage Sections and Regions –Engagement & relationship development for volunteer leaders –Increase opportunities for new activities & programs  Geographic Unit Operations –Simplify operational requirements for volunteers and staff –Understand impact of government and legal requirements on OU and Geo Unit decisions and operations –Need for closer integration of GeoUnit operations with IEEE organizational decisions; increasing overlaps of OU efforts world-wide  Developing and acquiring skills –Relationship development & management, leadership training, project management, process management, business analysis and development, enhanced international experience, metrics/benchmarking IEEE MGA – Strategic Considerations

MGA Worldwide Conference Presence  MGA is comprised of Geographic Organizational Units including Regions, Sections, Chapters, Affinity Groups and Student Branches –Any Geo Unit may sponsor a conference individually or in collaboration with others –Chapter sponsorship is generally done in conjunction with the Region or Section –A Geo Unit may provide technical or financial sponsorship –Geo Unit conferences are typically geared to an area of local member technical interest

Conferences Support the MGA Vision  Members engage with other members and non-members with similar technical interests  Offer opportunities for professional growth and networking  Build stronger relationships among the geographic units  Provide unique membership development opportunities for acquiring new members

Geo Units Partnership Benefits  Collaboration and presence of Local Members at conferences enhances IEEE credibility as an international organization  Provide cultural perspective and gain potential cost advantages  Transnational growth worldwide has resulted in more complex country requirements and laws. Local member support can help alleviate these issues.

Int’l Corp. Regulatory Compliance New Activity at IEEE Recognizes the volunteer’s need for increased support navigating regulatory requirements worldwide, but especially outside of the U.S. The goals of the International Corporate Regulatory Compliance Office are: Regulatory and legal compliance wherever IEEE does business; Integration of regulatory and legal compliance concerns into the general business planning of the IEEE; Service to the member and volunteer in executing regulatory and legal compliance Contact Anita Ricketts, Director of the office, with any questions or for assistance: +1 732 562 6009 or a.ricketts@ieee.org

Moving Forward IEEE and MGA must move forward in a rapidly changing world  As the world becomes more homogeneous and with growth of the internet, Geo Units have extended their professional networks to address local issues using a global knowledge base  As a result, new opportunities for technical collaboration worldwide are being created  Our continued success in conferences depend on our ability to recognize and support the changing dynamics of our world.  We are one team – Team IEEE
