Population Terms
2
Note taking Use the Population Terms Note page to take notes as you view the power point. “One trend I notice” statements should be a reflection of what you see in the maps/notes.
3
Population Density The average number of people living in an area Usually expressed a people per square kilometer
5
Population Distribution Where people live throughout the world People tend to live in places favorable to settlement: mild climates, fertile soil, adequate freshwater
9
Population Change Change in Population is based on these 3 factors: – Birthrate – Migration – Death Rate
10
Crude Birthrate The number of births each year for every 1,000 people living in a place
11
Migration The process of moving from one place to live in another Push-pull factors Immigrate: to move into a new country or region (Immigrate = In) Emigrate – to leave one country or region to settle in another (Emigrate = Exit)
12
Net Immigration
13
Net Emigration
14
Crude Death Rate The total number of deaths each year for every 1,000 people living in a place
15
World Death Rates
16
Fertility Rate The average number of children a woman of childbearing years would have in her lifetime, if she had children at the current rate for her country A fertility rate of 2.1 is necessary just to replace current population Worldwide average is 3.0
17
World Fertility Rates
18
Infant Mortality Rate Number of deaths among infants under age one per thousand live births Improved health care and nutrition has led to a lower infant mortality rate
19
World Infant Mortality Rates
20
Carrying Capacity The number of organisms a piece of land can hold
21
Talk with your table group How do indicators such as birth rate, infant mortality rate, death rate and fertility rate reflect the level of development of a country. More Developed Countries Less Developed Countries Newly Industrialized Countries
22
Vocabulary Focus Using your notes and what you have learned, complete a vocabulary organizer for each of the following terms. 1.MDC10. Immigrate 2.LDC11.
