Windows assigns a drive to every physical device connected to the computer Disk drive the logical space where files and directories are stored, indicated by a letter followed by a colon (for example, C: for the hard drive and D: for the CDROM drive). 5 Dr. Roger Webster Copyright 20085 Facts about Windows XP folders A folder’s name consists of a maximum of 255 characters. The root folder, designated by c:\ exists on every formatted disk. A path describes how to find a file starting at the root directory (for example, to refer to a file in the “docs” directory shown on the previous slide use c:\cs110\windows\docs Note the first \ designates the root, while the other \ are used to separate directory names.

File types: Text file (ASCII) only consists of characters on the keyboard, for example, letters, digits, and punctuation marks).
