13 Reading Balanced Approach –Read A-louds –Guided (Small groups based on individual reading level) –Independent Parent Portal: –*In grades K-2, the process of teaching Reading and Writing is developmental. Therefore the grades will not be posted every 10 days on the Parent Portal like the other subject areas.

15 Writing Workshop During writing time students will go through the process of writing –Prewriting (Brainstorm) –Drafting –editing –Final Copy/Publishing

21 Word Study Developmental Approach to spelling Helps students to understand the relationships among sounds, spelling patterns, and word meanings Involves sorting words into categories that share the same sound, word family, vowel pattern etc. On going assessment –Students may repeat sorts from previous year if the sort is not mastered yet and does not reflect in their writing.

22 Classroom Discipline *Individual –Earning Money for classroom store Given for positive behavior At the end of each month students can visit store –Letters home if behavior becomes a problem –Clip System -Behavior Calendar in take home folder. -Students will color in according to the color they were on for that day. Please check behavior calendar regularly. *Group -Point System *Whole Class - Gem Jar = special reward for the entire class

23 Snack Food for the Brain! Good –Natural, long lasting sugars Bad  –Artificial sugars that give quick rushes then lows.

24 Absences & Tardies –Contact the office –Sickness will send homework upon request –Vacations Extended absences are unexcused this year. Make-up work will not be sent home ahead of time. Can pick up upon child’s return. –Tardies Students arriving after 7:50 are tardy and must check-in at the front office Make sure students arrive to school with enough time for them to complete their morning routines.

25 Classroom Routines In the morning Dropping kids off make sure: They know how they are getting home Lunch & Snack Please leave any forgotten lunches in the office for students to pick up or meet them at the cafeteria. Leaving early Sending in a note with the time *Be careful with emails-I may not see it until the end of the day or may not be here. Calling the office works best

26 Dismissal Routines When picking up your child remember: They know how they are going home that day If being dismissed differently than normal, please send in a note that morning. Walkers: Parents are allowed to wait for their child outside the front of the building. For safety, parents are no longer allowed to wait in the lobby.

27 Star Student Star Student Bag –Estimation Jar –Favorite book to share (parent can come in to read if he or she would like ) –Favorite stuffed animal –4-6 pictures to share and hang in the room –Star Student Poster

28 Birthdays! -Due to new Loudoun County policy, we can no longer allow parents to bring in ANY kind of edible treats (cupcakes, doughnuts, cookies, etc). Food products will be allowed at Class Parties. -The class will acknowledge and celebrate birthdays during calendar time.

29 Field Trips We have 1 tentative field trip planned –Native Lands in May

30 Student Homework County says no more than 30 minutes Monday-Thursday –Reading - 15 minutes nightly –Word Study - Nightly assignment –Math – 1 weekly worksheet and 1 computer assignment (mandatory) –Content (occasionally) –Projects –Homework is due the next day unless assigned on a specific day.

31 Homework Report Card Outstanding – No missed assignments Satisfactory – misses 1-4 assignments Needs Improvement – misses 5 + assignments

35 YOUR Homework All the Forms to Fill Out! Letter to me –Place in white basket on my desk Student info for class directory- ( only phone numbers and addresses will be in directory) Emails will only go out to homeroom moms/dads Forms to fill out Conference Transportation sheet Volunteer Job

36 Reminders: Please leave name tag on desk. Buy purple take home folder from the office $2.00 All About Me Bag due on Tuesday Official school paperwork will be sent home on the 1 st day of school
