2 What is United Streaming?  United Streaming, also known as Discovery Education, is a provider of multimedia (audio and video) content and additional classroom resources.  We have a subscription with United Streaming that allows teachers and students to: search the multimedia content on their sitesearch the multimedia content on their site play it live (stream) from the United Streaming siteplay it live (stream) from the United Streaming site download the multimedia to be used in projects and presentationsdownload the multimedia to be used in projects and presentations

3 What is the Difference between Downloading and Streaming Video?  Downloading video It is when you download the entire video clip to your computer.It is when you download the entire video clip to your computer. Cons:Cons:  You must wait for the entire video to be saved to your computer before viewing it.  The media must be pre-recorded (it can not be live). Pros:Pros:  Better Playback - Video plays without skips or pauses.

4 What is the Difference between Downloading and Streaming Video? (continued)  Streaming video It is when you play a video clip as it is being sent to your computer.It is when you play a video clip as it is being sent to your computer. Cons:Cons:  You are dependent upon how fast your connection is to the video server. If there is slowness on the internet then your video might pause at times or play very choppy. Pros:Pros:  When you click on the video to play it, it starts immediately.  The multimedia can be live or pre-recorded content. (ex. The video from the presidential inauguration was streamed live over the internet.)

5 How do I log in?  Open up Internet Explorer and go to http://UnitedStreaming.com http://UnitedStreaming.com Enter Username and Password

7 How do I search for Multimedia? Typically you will use the Search Bar if you want to search for a particular topic. Use the Subject Search if you are trying to get ideas on how to present a subject. Use the Grade Search if you are trying to get ideas on how to present to a particular grade. When you search you can specify what type of media you are looking for. Typically you would search for All Content but you might want to restrict your results to full videos, video segments, or audio clips. You can perform an advanced search by keyword, media type, subject, grade, etc. You can search by NY Curriculum Standards.

8 Performing a Standard Search  Type in your search term and click GO.  Ex. Search for Civil War

9 Performing a Standard Search (continued) Your search results are shown on the right. The title is listed, the length of the video, a description about the video, what grades the video applies to, how many segments the video can be broken into, the year created, and if there are any guides or standards that apply. You can filter these results further by selecting the Media Type on the Left. You can filter these results further by selecting the Subject on the Left. You can filter these results further by selecting the Grade on the Left.

10 Viewing the Details about a Video  When you click on the Title of the Video or the Full Video button in the search results screen (shown in the previous slide), you will see the screen on the right which shows the details about the video. The video segments are listed below the title of the video. If you click on the title of the clip, the screen on the left will display a picture as to where the clip starts. You can also play or download the individual segments also. The entire video is initially selected and shown in the screen on the left. If you would like to play the entire video, click on the play button next to the video title or the play button on the screen on the left. If you would like to download the whole video, click on the icon that looks like a floppy disk. Media Settings allow you to choose if you want to play the video in windows media player or quicktime and if you want to enable closed captions.

11 Playing a Video  When you click on play you might see the following popup box when you are logged into Bethpage.  Please type your Bethpage User Name and Password  ex. My User Name is techteach

12 Performing an Advanced Search  The advanced search allows you to search for very detailed information.  For instance to the right I am searching for multimedia about the civil war that would be appropriate for high school students, ordered by copyright in descending order (showing most recent videos first).

13 Performing a Curriculum Standards Search  You can use a Curriculum Standards Search to find multimedia and other material for you to use to meet a particular New York Standard.

14 Where should I save the files so I can use them at Bethpage?  Please create a folder for yourself in the M:\ (Videos) Drive  Only teachers can create folders and files in the M:\ (Videos) Drive  Students can only view items in the M:\ (Videos) Drive

15 How do I incorporate the media into my PowerPoint presentation?  There are 2 different ways to incorporate a video into a PowerPoint presentation. 1.Embed the video into the presentation The video will play inside of Microsoft PowerPoint. The video will play inside of Microsoft PowerPoint. 2.Create a hyperlink to the video When you click on the link you will launch Windows Media Player in a separate window. When you click on the link you will launch Windows Media Player in a separate window.

16 Embedding Video in PowerPoint From the Menu Bar click on Insert>Movies and Sounds>Movie from File Navigate to the M:\ (Videos) Drive, select the movie, and choose OK.

17 Embedding Video in PowerPoint (continued) You will be asked if you want the video to automatically play when the slide loads or if you want to click on it to start. You can resize the video to how big you want it in your presentation by clicking in the corner of the video and dragging it out. Depending on your selection above, when you view your presentation, you might have to click on the video to start it.

18 Linking to the Video in PowerPoint Click into one of the Text fields in PowerPoint. Then from the Menu Bar click on Insert>Hyperlink

19 Linking to the Video in PowerPoint (continued) Type in what you would like the Hyperlink Text to say. This is the text that will appear in your PowerPoint Slide. Find the video you would like to link to in the M:\ (Videos) Drive and click OK.

20 Linking to the Video in PowerPoint (continued) This the Hyperlink Text you chose in the previous slide. You see that the text now displays as a hyperlink with underlining. When you play your presentation, you will click on this link and Windows Media Player will popup to display the video.

The next time you are at work, you can download the video from your email and save it on the M:\ (Videos) Drive.Yes.
