© SCKCEN Academy BNEN http://bnen.sckcen.be “Master after Master” degree of 60 ECTS, in English ° 2002, BNEN programme intends to remodel the nuclear education in Belgium, catalyse networking between academia, research centres, public utilities, etc. Organized by 6 Belgian universities and SCKCEN, support from industry Venue: SCKCEN Modular → allows for optimal time management for lecturers and students; facilitates individual participation in selected courses and foreign students participation in blocs of courses (ENEN program)
13
© SCKCEN Academy Radiation Protection Expert course http://www.sckcen.be/rpe “Extra driving force”: European Directive 96/29/EURATOM and its recent revision 13/59/EURATOM °2003, fits the Belgian legislative requirements for the recognition of the Radiation Protection Expert Cooperation between technical universities, SCKCEN and IRE In Dutch and French

© SCKCEN Academy Radiation protection Background modules Basic principles of nuclear physics Interaction of radiation with matter Radiation and dose measurements Biological effects of ionising radiation Gamma spectrometry Standards and legislation ALARA and safety culture Expertise modules Transport of radioactive materials Radon and increased natural radioactivity Ethical aspects of the radiological risk Management of radioactive waste Internal dosimetry assessment from bioassay measurements Quality assurance in nuclear safety Decommissioning and dismantling techniques Organization of emergency planning Misuse of radioactive materials: prevention and response (safeguards) Radiochemistry Good safety practices in controlled areas (practical training) Using measuring equipment (in interventions) (practical training) Visits BR1, BR2, BR3 HADES and EURIDICE demo hall Hot cells of the LHMA Radioactive decontamination wing of the medical services Emergency planning & follow-up room Whole body counter laboratory Radio- and microbiology laboratories Radioecology laboratories Nuclear calibration services
18
© SCKCEN Academy VISIPLAN VISIPLAN 3D ALARA planning tool is a PC-based programme developed for the ALARA analyst or the person responsible for the assessment of the dose uptake of the workers. It allows to assess the radiation doses in a 3D environment and to compare different work scenarios
19
© SCKCEN Academy Nuclear emergency management Overview of off-site nuclear emergency management, its principles and their application to those involved in emergency planning and response, e.g. health physicists, technical and radiological advisors, civil and environmental protection officers European training course on "Preparedness and response for nuclear or radiological emergencies“
20
© SCKCEN Academy Waste management and disposal Customised training courses in the field of long-term radioactive waste management Three areas that are very closely linked, i.e. Characterisation of radioactive waste packages in relation with its disposal Site selection and site characterisation Integrated safety assessment modeling Theoretical part + hands-on computer sessions + technical workshops + field visits
21
© SCKCEN Academy Decommissioning of nuclear installations European pilot project: decommissioning of BR3 SCKCEN succeeded at developing the best approaches for the optimisation of dismantling, decontamination and decommissioning techniques and processes (including the restoration of nuclear sites to so-called 'green fields‘, the realistic assessment of costs, and the development of techniques for minimisation of secondary waste and minimisation of radiation doses to the personnel) Courses for dismantling project managers, safety engineers, health physicists, decontamination and dismantling operators, but also governmental and regulatory bodies dealing with decommissioning

23
© SCKCEN Academy Approach Lecturers Team of engineers, physicists, technicians, biologists, occupational physicians, social scientists, … bring insight and ideas from their specific expert field Solid knowledge and experience in their field, good didactic qualities Programme All programmes tailored to needs of customer; flexibility in dates, duration, level, location, … In Dutch, French or English Venue Technical domain of SCKCEN or premises of customer Visits Research reactors and laboratories: possible to integrate in the training courses
24
© SCKCEN Academy Quality Assurance SCKCEN received the Qfor quality label for training institutes in December 2010, renewal in 2013 Lecturers follow “training facilitator” course, to update and improve didactic skills. 24
25
© SCKCEN Academy 3. Policy support International common needs Basic education and training providing the required level of understanding and competences A standard for the recognition of skills and experience Actions Harmonisation of training practice and skills recognition, through international networks and national programmes Coherent approach crucial in world of dynamic markets and workers’ mobility SCKCEN collaborates in EC framework programmes ( 7FP ENETRAP III, TRASNUSAFE, GENTLE, …), (ad-hoc) working groups of BVS-ABR (national), OECD, IAEA, … Senior Advisory Group of EHRO-N ENEN Association
26
© SCKCEN Academy 4. Caring for critical capacities / Research on transdisciplinary aspects Understanding the benefits and risks of radioactivity requires scientific and technical insight and training also an insight in the context and a sense for the societal and philosophical aspects of the situation Two specific training modules are available to support courses: Ethical aspects of the radiological risk Nuclear technology assessment Organization of reflection groups In collaboration with the SCKCEN PISA program of the Expert Group SPS
