2 Class of 2015  Student Orientation (SO)  SO 1: July 12-13  SO 2: July 14-15  SO 3: July 18-19  SO 4: July 21-22  SO 5: August 22-23* *Reserved for students who live further than 300 miles away  Navigating Rensselaer & Beyond (NRB)  August 23-28  Overnight’s August 21-23  Tuesday Night Toolbox (TNT) Student Success Series  Tuesday evenings throughout the semester

6 Advising hour  Goals:  Students know the course selection for their major (high anxiety)  Students become acquainted with each other  Students & Parents understand the advisor’s role and what resources are available  Advisors reiterate the importance of study skills, time management & office hours. (Academic Overview)

7 Advising Material  Planning your First Semester (on-line)  Copies of Class Hour Schedule (First Year classes only)  Ready Set Calculus is on-line  Advising slides (ALAC)

8 What should my advising session include?  Have students interacted with one another  Outline the role of an advisor  Advise on course selection - Planning Your First Semester, Course Catalog, and class hour schedule.  Advise on “The basics to success”  Eating well and healthy sleeping habits  Time management & study skills  Getting along with your roommate  Resources available  Make student’s aware of the schedule building process

9 Course Selection  Math class  Humanities, Arts & Social Science  Science  Major related course  Eng- 1 credit course (for Engineers)

10 Additional Information  Life Science & Chem-Eng majors should enroll in Chem 1110 w/advanced lab  Cal 1 will administer a pre-cal test the first week of class. Worth 5% of final grade. Math will have a flyer to give out  Chemistry 1100 will give an HS assessment test within 3weeks of class- 5% of final grade.

11 More Information  First Year Studies classified as IHSS classes(only for first year students only)  AP and transfer credit questions (in the Dinning Hall: The Commons) & DCC –for parents  Students need to register for 16-17 credits a semester to finish in 8 semesters  Full time is 12 credits (3 courses)

12 Information Continued  Student and Advisor Meeting (SAM)- for first year students starts in the Spring ’12  Class hour schedule is only on-line  IEA, Physics 1&2, Chemistry 1, & Bio all have common test times.  Any financial transactions are all on-line  Grades are on-line  Parents do not have access to student’s records

13 Changes in transfer credits: First Year Students  Advanced Placement are considered transfer credits  Students will be allowed to bring up to 32 credits of AP/transfer credits  Students will not have to chose at SO what AP/transfer credits to use.  During the fall semester, students with more than 32 credits, will have to decide which courses they want to be used.

14 Transfer Students  Transfer students will now need 64 Undergraduate RPI credits to graduate  They will also need to satisfied the residency requirement: 4 full time semesters or 2 summer sessions and 2 full time semester  # of credits changed from 48 to 64 credits  New features on CAPP report for advisors and Degree Clearance to check residency

15 Questions at SO  Students won’t ask many questions  Don’t know what to ask  Too embarrassed  Accept authority

16 Parents  They will ask many questions: Several kinds:  Laid Back:  Helicopter: Hover, circle around  Dive Bomber: Spot problem, charge

17 Common Questions  What is full-time?  How many credits does a student need to take in a semester to graduate in 4 years?  I have AP credit what should I do?***  I only had Pre-calculus will that be enough?  What’s the difference between high school & college classes?

18 Common Questions  What do I need to do to transfer in a class?  What is a good schedule?  What resources are available if I am struggling in class?  What if I have a Learning Disability?  What if I have a medical concern?
