5. Mrs. Kelly Murrieta I have been teaching since 2002 and this is my seventh year in 5 th grade. I have my Bachelors in Elementary Education, a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction and a reading endorsement. I have a large family with three boys and a girl. All three of my sons attend Jacobson. My husband has moved on from teaching to become a nurse. I became a teacher so I could impact the lives of small people. I am so lucky that I love my job. I am so lucky that I have the opportunity to impact the lives of others.

6. Dear Families I would like to welcome your child to the fifth grade at Jacobson Elementary School. I am looking forward to an exciting year of learning. Working together, we can make this a very successful year for your child. The attached information will give you a better understanding of the kinds of things that will occur in your child’s classroom this year.

7. Behavior Consequences First Offense- Verbal warning from the teacher Second Offense- Miss 1 recess and/or “time- out” in another room, loss of a Murrieta Mistake. Severe Disruption- Student sent to the principal and phone call home. Repeat Offenders- Student sent to the principal, meeting with parents and/or guardian, and behavior contract implemented.

Reading “Reading to learn, not learning to read”  This year students will be developing skills to attack traditional literature as well as varied informational texts.  The amount of rigor and text complexity will be far greater this year. The students will be examining the following:  Identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the structures and elements of literature.  Recognize and apply knowledge of the historical and cultural aspects of American, British, and world literature.  Identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the purpose, structures, clarity, and relevancy of functional text.  Acquire and use new vocabulary in relevant contexts.  Employ strategies to comprehend text.  Identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the structures and elements of literature.  Identify and explain the author’s use of figurative language and how it affects the text.  Explain basic elements of argument in text and their relationship to the author’s purpose and use of persuasive strategies.

10. Reading Continued…  Literature Groups  Your child will be meeting several times a week for small group instruction focusing on the elements of literature.  They will be completing literature studies where they will be responsible for reading assigned chapters prior to each meeting.  In addition your child will be pulled into a small group for close reading and concept enriching activities both with fiction and non fiction texts.

11. Detective Reading I will be encouraging your child to become a detective reader this year. I want your child to re-read just about everything they read in class two or three times. This allows them to identify the main idea, supporting details, cause and effect relationships, draw conclusions and even inference about the text.

12. A.R. Requirements 5 th Graders will be required to complete 20 AR points for the first two quarters. During the third and fourth quarters, the requirement will move up to 25 points.  The increase is in preparation for the 30 points per quarter in 6 th grade.  Students will need to read at least 3.0 non-fiction points per quarter. The other 17 points can be either fiction or non-fiction. Parents can check their child’s progress from home computer – Library Links on Jacobson website. 12

13. Writing We use the 6 Traits of Writing to teach the writing process. The traits we focus on are:  Ideas & Content  Conventions  Voice  Word Choice  Organization  Sentence Fluency  The writing process includes:  Prewriting  Drafting  Revising  Proofreading  Publishing

14. Writing Continued… Research writing is a process in which the writer identifies a topic or question to be answered. The writer locates and evaluates information about the topic or question, and then organizes, summarizes, and synthesizes the information into a finished product. Literary response is the writer’s reaction to a literary selection. The response includes the writer’s interpretation, analysis, opinion, and/or feelings about the piece of literature and selected elements within it. Functional writing provides specific directions or information related to real-world tasks. This includes letters, memos, schedules, directories, signs, manuals, forms, recipes, and technical pieces for specific content areas.

21. Scholastic Book Orders I will be placing scholastic book orders through out the year. I will also put Murrieta Movie Star Review Picks from the catalogs. These will be books that I think would be of high interest to 5 th graders. 22. Homework Requirements * Your child is responsible for at least 30 to 50 minutes of homework a night. If no homework is assigned or was all completed in class encourage your child to read. This reading may be books, magazines, newspapers, or any other form of reading. He or she may read to someone, have someone read to him or her, or even share the reading time. It would be a good idea for your child to read from the chapter book their reading group is doing in class or their book report book. There may be times throughout the year when your child is responsible for completing a special project. Some of these projects will be started in school, however due to the limited time we have to cover all other subject areas your child may need to work on and/or complete the project at home.

23. Homework Objectives and Policy Your child will be given an agenda where they will record all assignments. You as parents/guardians will need to sign the agenda every night. This will help ensure total awareness of your child’s homework at home and on my end here at school. Your child will lose a mistake for any homework assignment that is incomplete or not completed.

24.  Infinite Campus – Check your child’s grades online  Progress reports are sent home mid- quarter. 1 st quarter conferences will include these.  Sign/return report card envelopes quarterly. Grades

25.  Snack will be every day. Please don’t forget to send one every day! 26. Conferences Our first set of formal conferences are August 27 th and 28 th. The district is moving away from student led conferences.

27. Science Camp *Science Camp is at Prescott Pines, in Prescott Arizona. *Science Camp this year will be November 12 th -14 th. It will be 3 days and 2 nights. *The students will be attending 12 science curriculum based classes. * To be continued in the Parent Meeting.

28. TAX CREDIT DONATIONS Tax credit is the best way to support Jacobson and your child. We are asking for $200.00 to cover our three field trips this year.  Science Camp  Halley Heart Center  Jr. Achievement Biz Town It is a credit not a deduction.  Married couples can donate up to $400.00  Single can donate up to $200.00
