2 NS 2.1 Solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of positive fractions and explain why a particular operation was used for a given situation. Today’s objective: use our previous topics of equivalent fractions and converting to help add fractions. Learning target: Answer at least 3 of the 4 fraction addition with carrying problems correctly on the exit ticket.

3 Since addition means to combine, put all the shapes together to get the answer:

4 However, if we have enough pieces left over, we can combine the fractional parts to make another whole. Now what is another name for this amount?

5 We showed that We turned 4 of the 4ths into 1 whole. We used up 4 of the 4ths, so we only had left at the end, but we gained 1 whole, so now we have = 6 wholes.

6 How many pieces do we lose this time when we form another whole?
We lose 8 8ths, so we have left.

8 How do we add mixed numbers?
First add the fractions together, then add the whole numbers together. If the fraction of the answer is improper, reduce the numerator by the denominator. Then increase the wholes by 1.

11 Direct Station We will do word problems that involve both today’s topic, carrying when adding fractions, and yesterday’s topic, borrowing when subtracting fractions.

12 Collaborative Station
Each partner has a set of addition and subtraction problems to solve. Partner A’s are labeled (a, b, c, …), Partner B’s are labeled (1, 2, 3, …) and Partner C’s are labeled (A, B, C, …) Your job is to match up each partner’s problems that have the same answer (Partner A’s problem c and Partner B’s problem 2 might both have the answer 4 ½ )
