Blue Sea? Grey Sea!
3
The Pearl River
4
What Happened? In the past, we drinked from the Pearl River. we swam in it, we fished from it. It is a river that has nurtured so many generations that we can't believe what it is becoming today. What makes it one of the most polluted rivers in China?
5
Rubbish From July 2012, Guangzhou has begun to pick up the rubbish from the Pearl River. > 100 tons/day
6
Effluents & Sewage from households, 141.3 tons in 2007 from factories, 23.8 tons in 2007
7
Plankton red tide 赤潮 Phytoplankton
8
Plankton Water hyacinth---558 tons/day block the river course block the sun withered ones poison the water
9
Other Pollutants? Fertilizers, pesticides, detergents,oil... Today, we drink polluted water, eat poisoned fish, and never believed we could again swim in the Pearl... BUT, what can we do to solve this problem?
15
Types of polluted water According to usage industrial wastewater domestic wastewater According to component inorganic wastewater organic wastewater
16
Two chief reasons for the contamination and exacerbation Industrialization(dissolved minerals, toxic chemicals, and sediments) Urbanization
17
Water pollution control Enforce Existing Laws.(such as the Clean Water Act ) Improve sewage treatment systems. many water treatment plants are out-dated and needed to be improved.
18
Changes to agricultural practices. nutrient and pesticide water pollution solutions involve introducing greener agricultural practices. Re-establish wetlands and stop the destruction of wetlands.
19
Stop deforestation. More things we can do: Drive less. Use green household and personal care products. Use less plastic and don’t litter. …
20
Sewage Sewage is the mainly liquid waste containing some solids produced by humans, typically consisting of washing water, urine, feces, laundry waste, and other material that goes down drains and toilets from households and industry. It is a type of wastewater and is a major actual or potential source of pollution, especially in urban areas. It has been estimated that pollution of drinking water by feces is by far the biggest cause of death worldwide.
21
What does the word “sewage” reminds you of?
23
Question: Do people in other countries also suffer the same problem as we Chinese?
24
The largest sewage system in the world

The Mediterranean Sea

The Mediterranean Sea=the dirty sea? Pollution 650,000,000 t sewage 129,000 t mineral oil, 60,000 t mercury, 3,800 t lead 36,000 t phosphates Tourism Shipping

Paras.1-4 Introducing the topic Thesis statement: The Mediterranean is the most polluted sea in the world. Causes and consequences of the pollution in general. Paras.5-10 Improper treatment of sewage by many Mediterranean countries. Consequences: Contamination of sea water and fish Greater likelihood of disease Paras.11-13 Second main cause industries Untreated water emitted from factories along the coast and from factories Located far inland
44
Paras.14-15 Other causes of pollution Pesticides, detergents, fertilizers, oil, etc. Paras.16-20 Factors that lead to the severity of the case: Narrow and shallow outlet of the Strait of Gibraltar Weak coastal currents and feeble tides Long-standing practice of dumping wastes into the sea Multiplication of population and increasing number of tourists Paras.21-22 Conclusion Efforts being made to solve the problem
