Fossil Fuels There are three major fossil fuels: coal, oil, and natural gas Currently provide 85% of all the energy consumed in the United States. 2/3 of electricity Just about all of our transportation fuels Coal, oil, and gas are fossil fuels because they were formed from the fossilized remains of prehistoric animals and plant .
3
Fossil Fuels The environmental issues that are on the rise due to the burning of fossil fuels, and carbon dioxide being produced and emitted in the environment creating a greenhouse effect, causing global warming. Fossil fuels are currently the most economically exploitable sources of power for personal and commercial use
4
Coal Is used primarily for electricity
Supplies more than half the electricity consumed by Americans ¼ of the world’s coal reserves are found in the United States Research and development programs are regulating more effective pollution controls for existing coal-fired power plants.
5
Coal Coal is a mixture of organic chemical substances containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. It also contains small amounts of nitrogen and sulfur. Coal has had a big impact on the environment and it has also created health problems for coal miners due to over exposure to coal.
6
Oil Supplies more than 40% of our total energy demands
Supplies 99% of our automobile fuel Along with natural gas, supplies more than 60% of energy consumed in the US The US obtains less than half of its oil from domestic fields Two-thirds of oil discovered in the US remains in the ground
7
Oil Alternative fuels such as ethanol and methane which are cleaner burning OPEC controls much of world’s oil Cause of high gas prices Strategic Petroleum Reserve Stockpiled oil along the Gulf coastline Pres. Bush has ordered it to be filled to its 700 million barrel capacity by 2005
8
Natural Gas 900 of the next 1000 power plants in the US will use natural gas Domestically produced and readily available Over half of America’s homes and businesses use natural gas Accounts for 24% of all energy consumed in US
9
Natural Gas Because of efficiency gains, average homes use 22% less natural gas than they did 20 years ago An increasing source of alternative fuel because of its less harmful emissions Over 100,000 cars in the US run on natural gas Natural gas produces less carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides than other fossil fuels
10
Other Energy Sources Geothermal energy Hydropower Nuclear power
Heat from the Earth Can be taken from shallow ground all the way to molten rock Hydropower Nuclear power Solar power Wind power
