Switch off your Mobiles Phones or Change Profile to Silent Mode

Module CC2006NI Data Modelling and Database Systems AY 2012 Autumn

Agenda Structure of the Course Module Leaders Lecturers and Tutors Module Aim Learning Outcomes Assessment Expectation from students Topics covered in Data Modelling and Database Systems

Structure of the Course 1 Lecture (2 hours/week) 1 Tutorial / Seminar sessions (1.5 hours/week) – Tutorial / Seminar sessions of 1.5 hours 1 Computer lab (1.5 hours/week) Individual practical work using case study and hands on exercise Self Study

Module Leaders London Metropolitan University Dr J. Nikolakopoulos Islington College Prashant Lal Shrestha

Who am I? Prashant Lal Shrestha Bachelor in Engineering (Computer Science) > 19 years of Teaching Experience > 17 years of System Development and Project Management Experience > 6 years of Experience as Consultant for International Donor funded Projects Your Lecturer and Tutor for this module

Module Aim Allows students to understand, and put into practice, the techniques available for analysing, designing and developing database systems. To give an introduction to the issues governing the design and implementation of database systems. To provide an introduction to both the theoretical aspects of designing sound database systems as well as the practical aspects of implementing such systems.

Learning Outcomes Produce an Entity-Relationship model from a realistic problem specification Use formal design techniques (e.g. normalisation) to produce a database schema Design and implement a database system from a conceptual data model Manipulate and extract data residing in a database using relational algebra and SQL Discuss the relative merits of the relational environment

Assessment The assessment will consist of two components An Unseen examination (50 %) A Coursework (50 %) Students will to be assessed on their ability to absorb and apply theoretical material such as design notation and modelling.

Assessment Students will also to be assessed on their ability to demonstrate practical proficiency of a popular DBMS environment. The learning outcomes encompass both theoretical and practical aspects and the assessment strategy needs to reflect both these elements.

What is expected from you? Attend all Lectures and Tutorial / Seminar sessions / Computer labs Come in tutorial classes well prepared for class works. Clear your doubts during tutorials. Individual practical work using case study and hands on exercise Self Study Download Module Specification, Lecture slides & other materials from CET or LMU
