Flipped Teaching A Quick Introduction!!! (really quick!) Toni Barone & Mimi Nguyen, August 2012

A question….  http://www.polleverywhere.com/free_text_po lls/LTcwMzUwNjcxMw http://www.polleverywhere.com/free_text_po lls/LTcwMzUwNjcxMw

Some Useful Vocab!  screencasting = A screencast is a digital recording of computer screen output, also known as a video screen capture, often containing audio narration. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/  blended = A mixture of different learning environments.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blended_learning http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blended_learning  A course structure that employs a blend of face-to-face and online learning environments. weblearning.psu.edu/blended- learning.../what_is_blended_learning  flipped learning/ flipped classroom = A class in which the lectures are watched at home and the class time is used to work on what used to be assigned as homework. http://blendedclassroom.blogspot.com http://blendedclassroom.blogspot.com  A form of blended learning which encompasses any use of Internet technology to leverage the learning in a classroom, so a teacher can spend more time interacting with students instead of lecturing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flip_teaching

The Basics in a Visual!

What it does….

The Learning Environment

The Difference!

Million Dollar Question! Some lessons are good for flipping and others are NOT!!!! Please brainstorm with a partner/group (preferably someone in the same discipline) on: What lessons would benefit from using flipping? Try to be specific...for instance a lesson on sentence combining using a semi- colon would be awesome to flip...then class time could be used for practicing this!!!!

Quick Examples  One-take screencasts  http://amazing-lit-analysis- paragraphs.pen.io http://amazing-lit-analysis- paragraphs.pen.io  http://introducing-dickinson.pen.io/ http://introducing-dickinson.pen.io/  https://vimeo.com/44418107 https://vimeo.com/44418107

Some Simple Tips on Making Videos!  use conversational tone (natural...like you would do if you were doing it in front of class)  jokes are good, especially if you have inside jokes with your class--they love it  5-10 minutes max, but anything less than 10 is best (think attention span)  images are good if relevant (try not to use things that are distracting)  one take if possible (don’t waste time re- recording all the time...just naturally correct yourself if you make a mistake)  BEST if done with your VOICE!!!!!! Kids benefit from hearing it!!!!

Your Turn!  With a partner...create a 1-5 minute flipped lesson on something simple. Use the tools that you are familiar with:  powerpoint, keynote, iMovie, smart notebook  Be ready (EXCITED) to share your amazingness!!!

Helpful Resources  vimeo  pen.io  screenflow (cost $95)...it records everything on the screen  google docs

Ongoing Professional Development  If interested in doing more...contact us...and we can set up more after school workshops on the previous mentioned items...since one hour isn’t enough time to go over....OR check out the valuable resources we have compiled for you!!!
