The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology
CSEP Vision Excellence in exercise physiology and health and fitness through research and best practice. CSEP Mission Statement CSEP is the resource and voice for exercise physiology and health and fitness, providing leadership in research, education and practice to improve health outcomes for Canadians. The CSEP, then known as the Canadian Association of Sport Sciences (CASS), was founded at the Pan American Games in 1967, the result of four years of cooperative efforts by the Canadian Medical Association and the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) is a voluntary organization, composed of professionals interested and involved in the scientific study of exercise physiology, exercise biochemistry, fitness and health. CSEP is the only certification agency in Canada that has a RESEARCH BRANCH affiliated with a CERTIFICTION BRANCH

CSEP Professional Standards Program Background
Developed by CSEP in 1982. Developed in response to the needs and concerns of people involved in conducting fitness services As the program has developed and grown the name has changed: Fitness Appraisal Certification & Accreditation (FACA) 1982 CSEP Health & Fitness Program (CSEP HFP) 2003 CSEP Professional Standards Program (CSEP PSP) 2015 The CSEP PSP has the highest standards in the Canadian industry for fitness professionals Introduce the CSEP Professional Standards Program - the branch of CSEP that delivers the professional certifications The program was established by the CSEP in 1982 to address certain needs and concerns of personnel working in the physical activity, fitness and lifestyle appraisal industry. As there were no guidelines to regulate the conduct of fitness practices, a need was identified for standards that would protect the users of fitness services and, at the same time, acknowledge individuals who were qualified to conduct fitness practices. The Program was established to address the following needs and concerns of personnel working in the health and fitness industry. A need for consumer protection due to the absence of any standards regulating fitness appraisal personnel and centres. A concern that use of the electrocardiogram (ECG) would be restricted to physicians in response to the recommendations of a coroner’s inquest and the Ontario Medical Association. A need for appropriate recognition of fitness personnel with advanced qualifications in fitness appraisal, exercise prescription and exercise counselling. A concern that there was an absence of professionalism in the fitness appraisal industry. Prior to the implementation of the CSEP PSP, there were no guidelines regarding the type and nature of appraisals conducted by unqualified personnel. An unqualified individual could develop exercise programs based on results of fitness appraisals without prior demonstration of an understanding of training physiology, fitness or exercise prescription. Clearly, the public was placed in a potentially hazardous situation. The CSEP PSP has the highest standards in the Canadian industry for fitness professionals.
4
CSEP Professional Standards Program Objectives
To establish voluntary standards of competence for personnel and centres on a national scale, and to encourage those currently working in the field or anticipating entering the field to comply with these standards. To provide consumer protection by educating the public to recognize the distinction in qualifications between levels in the model. Essentially, there are two objectives to the CSEP PSP. The first is to establish voluntary standards of competence for personnel and centres on a national scale, and to encourage those currently working in the field or anticipating entering the field to comply with these standards. The second is to provide consumer protection by educating the public to recognize the distinction in qualifications between levels in the model. For an individual to participate in the CSEP PSP at any level, specific theoretical and practical standards of competence must be met. The CSEP realizes that unqualified personnel will continue to conduct fitness appraisals regardless of the existence of the CSEP PSP. However, it is better that the CSEP attempt to standardize and upgrade the quality of health and fitness appraisals, and attempt to limit the type of appraisals conducted by unqualified personnel, than to take no role in the system.

CSEP Professional Standards Program Certifications
Two levels of certification CSEP Certified Personal Trainer® (CSEP-CPT) CSEP Certified Exercise Physiologist® (CSEP-CEP) The CSEP-CPT certification will recognize individuals with formal post-secondary training in physical activity/exercise prescription focusing on health-related physical fitness. This training will allow them to provide individual physical activity/exercise prescription(s) to apparently healthy individuals based on the results of the CSEP-PATH. The purpose of the CSEP-CPT designation is to establish the standard in the Canadian personal fitness training industry for health-related fitness assessment, physical activity and lifestyle counselling. The CSEP Certified Personal Trainer (CSEP-CPT) is a professional with the minimum equivalent of 2-years of full-time study (or 60 credits) of University/College coursework in specific core competency areas related to the exercise sciences from an accredited post-secondary institution. A CSEP-CPT works with apparently healthy individuals or those with a stable health condition who are able to exercise independently. The objective of the CSEP-CEP certification is to recognize the qualifications of those persons who possess advanced formal academic preparation and practical experience in both health-related and performance-related physical activity/exercise science fitness applications for non-clinical and clinical populations.

Why Choose a CSEP Certification?
CSEP-SCPE, founding our policies and certifications on the more recent, up to date evidence-based research establishes a firm standard of credibility – we consistently locate the best-published research on the topic under study, and incorporate it into our policies, education, and certification processes. Evidence-Based Research (material that is constructed from reputable, objective research versus obscure findings or popular literature) means that the information that you use meets rigorous academic research standards and is peer-reviewed. In other words, the information is based on quantitative research, not someone’s opinion. As the Gold Standard in Exercise Science and Personal Training, CSEP-SCPE ensures excellence in exercise physiology, health, and fitness through research and best practice. By foregrounding our work in evidence-based research, we ensure that CSEP-SCPE remains a leader in exercise science and personal training, and in doing so, our members are privy to cutting edge information that situates their work at the forefront of exercise science and personal training activity and research. The field of exercise, physiology, and overall health sciences advances at such a fast pace that the body of evidence and foundational research must be methodically evaluated and integrated for the benefit of both patients and professionals alike.” By relying strictly on evidence-based research, we provide consistent quality assurance for you, our members (CSEP-CEP, CSEP-CPT, Academic, Student, and Business Members). CSEP Certified Personal Trainer®
Scope of Practice A CSEP-CPT works with apparently healthy individuals or those with a stable health condition between the ages of years who are able to exercise independently. CSEP-CPTs use the tools and strategies outlined in the CSEP-PATH manual to: Conduct pre-participation health screening assessments Conduct submaximal aerobic and musculoskeletal fitness and body composition Design, implement, and monitor client-tailored exercise programs The CSEP-CPT is NOT a pre-requisite or stepping stone to the advanced CSEP-CEP. But this is a certification they can obtain during their studies. Scope of Practice A CSEP-CPT works with apparently healthy individuals or those with a stable health condition who are able to exercise independently. Conducts basic pre-participation health screening assessments on all clients using evidence-based tools and gathers information about physical activity and lifestyle behaviours Administers various fitness assessments on clients including submaximal aerobic fitness, musculoskeletal fitness (muscular strength, endurance, power, flexibility, and balance), and anthropometry. Gathers and applies information about the physical activity, fitness, and lifestyle of a client or group of clients to design, implement, and monitor client-tailored submaximal exercise programs for healthier living. Recognizes their own area of expertise and refers clients who fall outside that expertise to a CSEP Certified Exercise Physiologist®, physician, or other appropriate health care provider. The CSEP-CPT is not certified to: Use an ECG for any purpose. Utilize any assessment protocols or design exercise programs that require maximal aerobic or anaerobic effort. Assess muscular strength using maximal 1RM assessment protocols or design programs based on resistance loads exceeding 90% of the predicted 1RM. Administer fitness assessments, or design, implement and monitor client-tailored exercise prescription strategies for populations with unstable medical conditions, more than one medical condition, under 15 years or over 69 years, or with special needs that the CSEP-CPT feels ill-equipped to address.

Their CSEP-CEP coupled with their University degree, training and experience will provide enable them to work along side other allied health professionals. Scope of Practice The CSEP-CEP Scope of Practice has 11 points and sanctions the certified member to work with general populations, high performance athletes, and those with chronic health conditions, functional limitations or disabilities across the lifespan. The CSEP-CEP performs assessments/evaluations, prescribes conditioning exercise, provides exercise supervision/monitoring, counselling, healthy lifestyle education, and outcome evaluation for “apparently healthy” individuals and/or populations with medical conditions, functional limitations or disabilities through the application of physical activity/exercise, for the purpose of improving health, function and work or sport performance. A CSEP-CEP is sanctioned by the CSEP to: 1. Conduct pre-participation screening, administer various health and fitness assessments, prescribe and supervise exercise programs, and provide counseling and healthy lifestyle education to general populations, high performance athletes, and those with chronic health conditions, functional limitations or disabilities across the lifespan. 2. Conduct pre-participation screening using evidence-informed tools that will support recommendations for individual client-tailored physical activity and exercise programs within the CEP’s individual knowledge competency. 3. Accept referrals from licensed health care professionals who are trained and licensed to diagnose and treat acute and chronic medical conditions. The CEP may clear clients with one chronic health condition to work with a CPT. Further medical clearance should be sought if the health condition is unstable. 4. Fees Application Fee Theory Exam Fee
$35 for the review of your applicant file Theory Exam Fee $155 CSEP-CPT $200 CSEP-CEP Practical Exam & Workshops/Practical Skills Review Fees These fees vary across the country. This chart is an average of the cost in Processing and reviewing application forms is extremely time-consuming and skilled work; CSEP’s Education Coordinators must be thorough with each and every application received, and must have an in-depth knowledge of the CSEP CPT & CEP programs. Posting and administering theory and practical exams requires infrastructure resources, as well as staff time and processing costs, ie credit card costs, mailing, etc… In addition, in order to maintain the level of integrity that CSEP was built on, the CSEP PSP program must continue to affect research and development of its flagship programs. All of this translates to [minimal] costs to the applicant & candidate. When it comes to Workshops and Exam fees, you will notice a disparity between testing centers; this is simply due to the very wide range in overhead costs from one facility to another; things like facility rentals, CSEP IE & Assistant remuneration, Insurance, etc…are all variables which factor into the differentiation of costs.
