3 Creating a respectful, responsible and safe school

Promotes positive behavior. Student choices are tracked on a Clip Chart. All students begin the day on green in the middle of the chart. Clothespins are moved up or down depending on choices. Clips that are moved down may be moved back up if the teacher sees the student making improved choices. In addition, once a clip is moved up, it may be moved down. All clothespins are moved back to green at the end of the day. Agendas: Check each day for where your child landed on the clip chart. “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. 4 STANDARD COURSE OF STUDY
North Carolina's Standard Course of Study defines the appropriate content standards for each grade level to provide a uniform set of learning standards for every public school in North Carolina.  The Standard Course of Study was completely overhauled in the past few years, and the new standards were implemented for the first time in This initiative is part of a long-term trend to update and improve the standards as expectations change and as new research and information become available. Currently, North Carolina’s Standard Course of Study consists of the Common Core State Standards in English language arts and mathematics and the North Carolina Essential Standards in all other subjects, including social studies, the arts, healthful living, career and technical education, and world languages. 5 Literacy: Readers Workshop
Reading for Meaning 1. create mental images 2. use background knowledge/make connections 3. ask questions 5. determine the most important themes or ideas 6. synthesize information 7. Use “fix up” strategies Readers learn these skills as the teacher models these strategies, through guided practice, independent practice using “just right books”, and when working with peers. Strategies are modeled until the teacher gradually releases the responsibility to the reader. Good readers use reading strategies simultaneously to interpret texts. Example of Reader's Workshop

6 Writing: Writer’s Workshop Model
Personal narratives (Small Moments) Sequenced and well elaborated Becoming Master writers by using Mentor Texts, expanding their writing Informational Introduce a topic Use facts to support topics Conclude Opinion pieces Form an opinion on a topic Use reasons to support (WHY!) 7 Words Their Way What is Words Their Way?
Words Their Way is a developmental spelling, phonics, and vocabulary program. Word study is implemented as a small component of the literacy plan but it is also interwoven in actual reading and writing texts. Students learn features by completing activities such as word sorting, word hunts, games and drawing and labeling. Students work individually, with partners, and in small groups to encourage cooperative learning and individual responsibility. New this year: Switching classes

9 Mathematics: Math Investigations
Adding and subtracting within 100 Mentally adding & subtracting within 20 fluently Know all sums of 2 one digit numbers Solving Word problems Place Value (hundreds, tens & ones) Money (identify, know worth, add & sub) Coin Song Time (hour, half an hour, quarter & 5 minutes) Measurement (length in, ft, cm, m) Geometry Fractions (1/2, 1/4, 1/3)

12 Homework STAR Binder (Students That Are Responsible)
Homework Journals & Math Homework- Students will receive their journal and math homework on Monday and must return on Friday. Nightly Reading: at least 20 minutes, please sign your child’s agenda and include the book title

13 Homework: Star Binders
Rules for the Binder Keep Binder organized (all papers in their proper place). Keep Binder in a safe place. Keep all drinks and food AWAY from Binder. Bring Binder to school every day.

14 Homework Journal Assignments
Homework Journals Homework Journals will go home on Monday. Complete the weekly assignments and turn in the journal on Friday. Math assignments will also go home on Monday and are due on Friday. Please write the date next to each assignment and use both the front and back of each page. Click Here to see Homework Journal Assignments

15 Communication Weekly Newsletters via (usually sent out on Mondays) Thursday Folders- These will come home on Thursday each week. They contain notes from the teacher, grade level, school staff and PTA, as well as your child’s graded work. Agendas- Please feel free to use your child’s agenda to write notes in. Also, make sure you check it daily for their behavior color, homework assignments & notes from your child’s teacher.
