RENEWABLE RESOURCES Resources that can be used over and over again to produce energy without fear of running out. These resources replenish themselves naturally.

Solar Energy Heat energy** Light energy** Used to tell time Can be used for cooking Can be used to help purify water

Wind Power The use of wind energy dates back thousands of years. It was originally used to pump water for wind mills. Generates electricity

Hydroelectric Energy Electric energy produced by the action of falling water Electricity generated by water flowing downhill

Biomass Energy Energy from the sun is necessary for biomass energy Biomass energy contains energy stored from the sun - plants and photosynthesis Biomass = natural materials Form of electricity produced from plant/animal waste Energy that can be used through the use of burning (sawdust, tree bark, trees, grasses)

Biomass Energy Biomass can pollute the air when it’s burned, but not as much as fossil fuels Biomass releases carbon dioxide, which is also known as a Greenhouse Gas (greenhouse gases are bad for the environment because they trap heat from the sun in the Earth’s atmosphere)

Biomass Energy Burning Wood Using corn as fuel Biodiesel is a form of fuel made with vegetable oils, fats, grease (recycled from restaurants sometimes)

Geothermal Energy Energy generated by converting hot water or steam from deep beneath the Earth’s surface into electricity Heat transferred from the Earth’s core Natural heat can be used to generate electricity and heat homes and businesses

Wave/Tidal Energy Energy powered from the surface of waves Rise and fall of waves causes rotation of object so energy can be made

NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES A natural resource that cannot be re- made, re-grown, or regenerated Exists in a fixed amount that is used up faster than it can be made by nature

Non-Renewable Resources Non-renewable resources are also called fossil-fuels. The natural resources (coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear energy) are named this because of fuels found in the top layer of the earth’s crust

Coal Formed in swamps where plant remains were saved by water and mud Coal is a burnable black rock It is the largest single source of fuel for electricity world-wide Coal is dug up from the ground by surface mining or deep mining

Crude Oil or Petroleum Naturally occurring liquid found within the earth Burned oil generates heat, electricity, and sometimes lighting. Used for powering engines

Natural Gas Cleanest and safest of energy sources Odorless, colorless gas that smells sometimes like rotten eggs Sources of natural gas are swamps, marshes, and landfills Delivered to homes through pipelines Natrual gas is used for heating, cooking, and bunsen burners

Nuclear Energy Nuclear energy relies on the splitting of the element Uranium atoms in a process called fission. This generates heat for producing steam that then makes a turbine produce electricity
