South African School System Primary School – 7 years High School – 5 years: Last year is known as the MATRIC year, short for ‘matriculaion into university’ In High School, students are seperated into HG – higher grade SG – standard grade LG – lower grade You have to study hard in the Matric year in order to enter university. There are no ‘vestibulares’ in South Africa. If you can’t enter University, you redo the Matric year or you can study at a TECHNICON (eg: Fatec) or Technical College (eg: Senai)

Problems South Africa’s main problem is AIDS. 46.2% of patients are HIV + 15% of health workers are contaminated 10% of the population is HIV positive and around 600 people die per day of AIDS. The disease is mainly among the native African population. Reasons: - drugs - rape - unprotected sex in rural communities - lack of sterilization of hospital equipment - babies born with HIV
