2 Traditions & culture The most famous thing about Scottish culture is, of course, the kilts. The most famous winter sport is, probably curling, a very special kind of winter sports. Curling

3 Bagpipe is a traditional music instrument from Scotland. A bagpipe with descriptions

4 Military Tattoo It’s held in August. 600 performers play military music and march to it. The festival started in 1947.

5 The word Tattoo is derived from the Dutch word "Tap-toe" which means quite literally "turn off the taps". The signal which indicated that soldiers should return to their quarters was transmitted by drum beat each evening.

6 Literature Scotland is an amazing country, so it attracted poets to write about it. Robert Burns & Walter Scott were among them. Walter Scott

7 Geographical Position Scotland is a part of the UK, situated in the north of the island. It’s divided in two parts: Highlands & Lowlands.

9 Lowlands Autumn in Lowlands Though it’s an industrial part of the country there are still a lot of amazing places like this. Lowlands, especially the Clyde valley, is the heart of industry with its huge busy cities as Glasgow or Edinburgh. Glasgow

10 Edinburgh Edinburgh is the capital of the country. It’s called Athens of the North. It’s a city of wonderful buildings. Each has something to tell… It’s divided in two parts: The Old Town & The New Town

11 The Old Town The Old town lies between The Castle and Holyrood Palace. The Royal Mile is a part of it. It’s a line of streets going from The Castle to the Holyrood Palace. The Royal Mile

12 The Castle The Castle is in fact older than the city. It used to be a fortress, then a Royal palace. A postcard with the Castle Edinburgh Castle

13 The Royal Mile The Royal Mile is 1 mile 107 yards long. The narrow 15th century house, owned by John Knox - can be found just off the High Street, but most of the buildings in this area were rebuilt in the 18th - 19th century. John Knox house

14 There are also some pretty places to see such as the Cannongate, the monument to the dog called Bobby, and, of course, the end of The Royal mile – The Holyrood Palace The Cannongate Bobby

15 The Holyrood Palace It’s the official residence of the Queen. It was founded in 1498 by James IV. Palace is open to visitors for most of the year, except when a member of the Royal Family is in residence, usually May each year.

16 Princes Street Princes Street is the most beautiful street of Scotland. It has a lot of green gardens. Princess Street lies between the New Town and the Old Town.

17 “A poem of stone”. Princes Street is connected with the name of the famous writer, Sir Walter Scott. A monument 200 feet high rises among green trees. The Scotts call it a poem of stone.

18 The New Town Dublin street In the 1700’s the Old Town was overcrowded, noisy and dirty. So it was decided to build a new Edinburgh. The part was called The New Town Moray place Charlotte
