Early History New Countries, Ancient Lands India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are striving to make their way in the modern world. Early History The Indus Valley civilization: Began in 2500 B.C Had good infrastructure Highly developed & urban Was invaded in 1500 B.C by the Aryans, and fell after Later controlled by Britain

(Early History…) Partition and War Partition- Separation British and India divided in 1947 There was a lot of violence between Muslims and Hindus. Kashmir was an area of which several wars have been fought, Military and Rule Since independence, both Pakistan and Bangladesh had political struggles.

Struggling Economies Subsistence Farming Both Pakistan and Bangladesh revolve around farming and in Bangladesh fishing. Climate makes it hard to plant crops due to natural disasters such as cyclones. The main crop for Bangladesh to grow is rice because of their wet climate.

(struggling economies…) Small Industry They have small factories and lack the things needed for expansion Growing textile (clothing) industries that provide sources of revenue and employment Small factories would join with big ones to help them grow Entrepreneurs (people who start and build a business) use microcredit (makes small loans to poor entrepreneurs) to start their business This growth in textile has changed living standards for many producers, especially women.

Disasters Cyclone A cyclone is a violent tropical storm. It can harm thousands of people and destroy many of peoples things such as houses. In 1970 there was a cyclone in Bangladesh very similar to Hurricane Katrina

One Religion, Many People Religion in the region Both Pakistan and Bangladesh want unification but that also causes cultural diversity. Islamic culture People in Islamic culture do daily prayers and they also celebrate Ramadan (fasting for a month, Jun17-July17) Islamic culture is practiced through their law in Pakistan more than it is in Bangladesh

(one religion, many people…) Ethnic Diversity Pakistan has multiple ethnic groups such as Punjabis, Sindhis, Pathans, Mujhars, and Balochs. The majority of Bangladesh people are Bengalis.

Modern Life and Culture Love of Poetry Poetry for Pakistan and Bangladesh is like movies and music for us. Poem readings are very famous and attract many people Rabindranath is a famous poet loved by Bangladesh and their national anthem is by him. Music and Dance Pakistan and Bangladesh has a lot of traditional folk music and dances. In their dances they tell myths, legends, and stories.
