India
5
My name is Alice. I’m 15 years old.
6
Today, I am in India. I’ve left all my friends behind in London.
7
My Dad has been so stressed. On Monday, he had been yelling non-stop.
8
There is hardly any oil left in England so he has no job. Mum can’t work since she is pregnant.
9
Our family is hungry for we have little money. Dad told us to save up to move countries.
10
Ming had to sell most of her paintings, and we finally saved just enough to fly to India, where there is more oil. Hopefully Dad can get a job soon. SOLD
11
Soon, I was standing in the middle of my small, new house in India. My house is tiny, but it will do for the time being. View of India from the plane
12
My new sibling and I will need to share a small room. The four of us will share a miniature bathroom, a tiny kitchen and a cramped living room.
13
Not too bad for now. Have a look: Kitchen Living Room The Baby’s and my Room My Parent’s Room Bathroom Front Door
14
The only bad thing, is that we didn’t find the best neighbourhood. There are rough gangs around here that my family and I are very afraid of. I’ve heard stories about them at school. Girls say they kidnap children like us, after dark. They walk around in groups with guns and knives. They are known as the Hyenas.
15
The boys say they kidnap girls because they’re annoying, but I know that’s not true. Apparently, last week, they stole the school’s register, so now they go around to kids houses from our school, knocking on their doors and calling their names.
16
My Mum is stressed as well as my Dad. As soon as we got here, she was rushed away to the hospital, and had my new baby brother Max.
17
Today I came home from my second day at my new school to find a note on the table. It says: Dear Alice, Max got a little bit sick today, so Dad and I took him to the doctor. We will be home late tonight. Mum xx
18
It was an unexpected change of plan, but I didn’t mind. As long as none of the Hyenas are close by tonight, I will be fine. I play on my ba-xi and draw for a few hours. Then I hear a sound. I think the Hyenas are here. Why tonight? I feel afraid by myself. I feel cold, even though it’s boiling outside.
19
Someone is knocking on my door. I don’t want to open it. I just stare at Ming’s last painting on the wall. It is of a small girl on a swing connected to a tree. She is alone, just like me. Ming loves to paint, whilst I create new games on my ba-xi.
20
There’s the sound again, but now their calling my name. How do they know it? Have they found my name in the school register? If I was still in London, I would call my friends for company and advice. But now they are so far me and I have no one.
21
I don’t want to tell my parents, it will just make them more stressed. My heart is beating as fast as a mouse’s. It sounds like a long hum instead of separate beats. I’m glued to the spot where I am standing. My fright has taken away my ability of movement. I finally free my feet, and quietly tip-toe up to my room, slide in to bed and turn on my ba-xi.
22
I decide to play my new game called FashionIndia. Hello Alice! ഹലോ ആലിസ്

I need some more comfort other than little girls on my game. I’ll go onto my drawing app. Ba-xi Brad is there. He is telling me to stay calm and to try and get some sleep.
27
So I turn off my ba-xi, and take Brad’s advice.
28
I wake to the sound of a jeep driving and it’s engine turning off. My family is home. At last, the nightmare is over.
29
That night with my family, I hear the sound of the Hyenas. They come knocking on our door once again. So my parents open it, and standing there is my sitter.
30
“Alice! Why weren’t you opening the door yesterday? I was calling your name. I was so worried!” I am so confused. “But I heard the Hyenas!” I say. “No, they weren’t around last night”
31
I feel so silly! I can’t believe I tricked myself into thinking my sweet sitter, was a Hyena, ready to pounce.
32
We all celebrate the presence of Max, who is very cute and cuddly, over some butter chicken and some fish that my sitter had bought fresh from the street, and are all happy about the news of my Dad’s new job here in India.
