Objectives of SS Strands The Ohio Department of Education has created these Social Studies strands in an attempt to develop a variety of crucial skills within the same SS classroom. The strands help guide teachers who are unsure of how to develop these areas of SS into their classes, and will strengthen their abilities as a teacher.

American Heritage - Activities u Determine the origin of your family name. u Trace your family tree back at least 4 generations. u Locate Native American tribes that used to live in your area. u Video and Open Response Questions- Plymouth Rock, My Home. u Investigate why the original 13 colonies felt they had to break free from England.

Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities - Activities u Register to Vote. u Apply for the Selective Service and for Jury Duty. u Evaluate a W-2 form and file a tax return (real if possible). u 1-2 page essay about the importance of the 1st Amendment in their everyday lives. u Debate on controversial rights - - Right to bear arms - Freedom of Religion (in schools) - Privacy Rights (after Sept. 11th)

(2- 3 pages)

Science, Technology, and Society - Activities u Create a Power Point presentation to present your history topic to the rest of the class. u Film a short video (3-5 min.) reacting a moment in history. u Use the Internet to research a topic for a paper. Reference at least 4 sites visited…giving their URL’s. u Review a Hollywood history production and compare and contrast it to the original events studied in class. u Use the Internet to register to vote, apply for the selective service, file a tax return, or e-mail your congressman. In addition, visit various government agencies online.
