4. Coming Home Although the Cold War tensions were high in Berlin, Germany and Europe, back home in the US, many Americans we happy to home/alive after WWII. We start to see a change in American culture, social culture and the overall outlook on life from 1945- 1950.

5. Conformity Trying to fit in or be similar to the people who surround you. Copying someone you see on TV is conformists.

6. Materialism Being more interested in having or buying “stuff” or materials than in other things like being with friends, enjoying nature, thinking, drawing, reading, making music…

7. Coming Home With many Americans unable to buy much of anything during the Great Depression and World War II, Americans went on a major shopping spree once the war was over. This was called Pent-up Demand. Americans started to buy cars, clothes, necessities and other luxuries.

8. Coming Home For soldiers that served in WWII, options concerning their future became available and attractive to many young men. The GI Bill: – Passed in 1944 – Gave soldiers options for affordable loans for college or a home. – Created an educated workforce. – Helped the economy grow.

Coming Home Interstate Highway Act: – 1956 law paying for 40,000 miles of new highways. – Highways connect coast to coast. – Allows the creation of Suburbs- residential neighborhoods outside major cities (ex. Silver Spring, Wheaton, Olney). – The creation of suburbs leads to the White Migration- white families move out of cities to residential neighborhoods. – Great boost to automobile industry.

10. Coming Home Once all the men cam back from WWII, they wanted all their jobs back. Women and other minorities were once again left without jobs. Women turned from rough and tough factory workers, to pretty, clean, and docile housewives. – Their main focus was to make the man of the house happy.
