How-to Play Tennis FOR BEGINNERS

Rackets Light weight Wide head Long length Any brand Synthetic Materials

Handgrips Hold racket in your right hand. Should have its strings perpendicular to the ground. Hold it like you are shaking someone’s hand.

Forehand Stroke Bring Right Hand back. Put your left hand in front of you, for guidance. Step the left foot forward as you swing. Swing all the way through. Go back to original position of two hands on racket and knees bent.

Backhand Stroke Start on left side of body and continue to the right side of the body. Use both hands on the racket as you swing. Step your right foot forward as you swing. Swing all the way through. You are “Golfing”. Return back to original position.

Volleys The ball is air bound. Stand about 3 feet from the net and in original position. Hit / pat, but DO NOT swing! Turn your body to either side to hit the ball that’s coming at you.

Serving Stand behind the white line in the back. Basically- Toss the ball straight up and hit it just as it begins its fall. Hit the ball into the small box diagonal from where you are standing.

Overview of Scoring Scoring: love(0), 15, 30, 40, game When it is “out” the other team gets a point. On the Line is “in”. In singles, the innermost line is the boundary line. In doubles, the outermost line is the boundary line. Singles-best 2 out of 3 games Doubles-first to six (set) or eight (pro- set) games

Shortened Rules No hitting people with rackets! No curse words! No bad attitudes! Be a good sport! Pay attention! If you didn’t see whether the ball was in or out-it was out. On the line is in. Ball can only bounce once and be hit before the other team gets the point. Any disagreements…have the coach come and watch. Shake other player(s) hands after match. Always watch were the ball lands. Be prepared for the hit back. Be ready to MOVE! Call a letter, spin the racket and the person with the correct letter can pick side or serve.
