Naming Type (III) Compounds Objective: To learn how to name molecular compounds containing only Nonmetals Go to pg 95 Note: If you’re viewing this online, make sure you hit “slide show” then “from beginning”

Latin Numbers What is the name for ONE? What is the name for ONE? Mono Examples Mono Examples Monopoly: The market condition that exists when there is only one seller Monopoly: The market condition that exists when there is only one seller Monologue: Any composition, as a poem, in which a single person speaks alone. Monologue: Any composition, as a poem, in which a single person speaks alone.

Latin Numbers What is the Latin prefix for eight? What is the Latin prefix for eight? Octa Octa What are some examples? What are some examples? Octopus October Octopus October Origin: the eighth month of the early Roman year, model of September, November, December Origin: the eighth month of the early Roman year, model of September, November, December

Which of the examples below are type (III) compounds? NaCl NaCl F 2 F 2 CO 2 CO 2 CCl 4 CCl 4 CuCl CuCl CO 3 2- CO 3 2- P 2 O 5 P 2 O 5

Disqualifiers If it only has one kind of atom. For example, Br 2 is an element not a compound. If it only has one kind of atom. For example, Br 2 is an element not a compound. If it has a negative or positive charge. For example NH 4 + is an ion. If it has a negative or positive charge. For example NH 4 + is an ion. If it doesn’t start with a nonmetal like NaCl is a ionic compound If it doesn’t start with a nonmetal like NaCl is a ionic compound

Rules for Naming Type III Binary Compounds The first element in the formula is named first, and the full element’s name is used. 2. The second element is named as though it were an anion. 3. Prefixes are used to denote the numbers of atoms present. 4. Do not say mono if the 1 st element has only one atom CO 2

Name BF 3 Rule 1 Name the 1 st element, boron. Rule 2 Name the second element ending in -ide: fluoride. Rules 3 and 4 Use prefixes to denote numbers of atoms. 1 boron atom: don’t use mono! Three fluorine atoms: use the prefix tri-. The name of BF 3 is boron trifluoride.

Name the Compound NO The name for NO is nitrogen monoxide. Note that the second o in mono- has been dropped for easier pronunciation. The common name for NO, which is often used by chemists, is nitric oxide.

Name the Compound NaCl Note that this compound starts with a metal. You follow the old rules of naming the positive ion followed by the negative ion. Note that this compound starts with a metal. You follow the old rules of naming the positive ion followed by the negative ion. The name is sodium chloride The name is sodium chloride

Name the Compound N 2 O 5 Dinitrogen pentaoxide Dinitrogen pentaoxide

Name the Compound Al 2 O 3 Aluminum Oxide Aluminum Oxide I hope I didn’t fool ya! I hope I didn’t fool ya! This is a metal and non-metal. Not a type(III) compound. This is a metal and non-metal. Not a type(III) compound.

Name the Compound H 2 O Water Water I hope I didn’t fool ya! I hope I didn’t fool ya!

Name SO 3 and O 2- Sulfur trioxide Sulfur trioxide Note that the second one has a negative charge. Note that the second one has a negative charge. This is not a molecule. This is an ion. Its name is oxide. This is not a molecule. This is an ion. Its name is oxide.

Name CO CO 2 O 2 Carbon monoxide Carbon monoxide Carbon dioxide Carbon dioxide This is one of the seven diatomic elements the name is Oxygen This is one of the seven diatomic elements the name is Oxygen

Name F - F 2 AlF 3 SF 4 This is an ion …………fluoride This is an ion …………fluoride This is an element ……fluorine This is an element ……fluorine This is type(I) ………… aluminum fluoride This is type(I) ………… aluminum fluoride This is a type(III) ……. Sulfur tetra fluoride This is a type(III) ……. Sulfur tetra fluoride

Name Ca 2+ Co Co 2+ Calcium Calcium Cobalt Cobalt Cobalt(II) Cobalt(II)

How do I know if they are type (I), (II) or (III)?

QUIZ 1 – 5 Name the following Name the following 1. PO 4 3- 1. PO 4 3- 2. P 2 O 5 2. P 2 O 5 3. K 3 P 3. K 3 P 4. O 2 4. O 2 5. SO 3 5. SO 3

Quiz 6 6. Which of the below is/are molecular compounds? 6. Which of the below is/are molecular compounds? (I) PCl 3 (II)NO 3 - a. Both (I) and (II)b. just (I) c. Just (II)d. neither (I) nor (II)

Quiz 7 Which is not a molecular compound? Which is not a molecular compound? CO 2 COO 2 CO 2 COO 2
