Would American Imperialism increase or decrease American Nationalism?
You will work in groups to examine primary sources to determine the reasons for U.S. imperialism. Nationalism: the policy or doctrine of asserting the interests of one's own nation,  viewed as separate from the interests of other nations  or the common interests of all nations. Would American Imperialism increase or decrease American Nationalism?

Does this cartoon increase or decrease American Nationalism?

Alaskan Purchase “(William) Seward has done it again. Seward’s Folly has left the American Public and Government Officials alike scratching their heads with the newly purchased land from Russia. Over 200,000 acres of cold, unwanted land from Russia, that serves no benefit to the people of the United States.” -New York Times 1868

Hawaii Acquisition “This opportunity for the American people is one that will go down in history as a great one for years to come. The Hawaiian Islands are a group of Islands in the Pacific Ocean that will provide exotic resources and much needed trade routes to countries in the Pacific. Taxes on sugar will decrease and we will strive to establish a military presence in the Pacific.” -North Carolina Senator John Cameron (1898)

Panama “The people of Panama have been suppressed their right of liberty by a neighboring country far too long. These people have the God-given right to handle their own inquiries and to live their lives as free as they see desire. The aggressor of Columbia has taken that away from these people who are now defenseless. It is our duty, as the Unites States of America, to protect or friends and neighbors, and give them the same basic rights that we enjoy here in the greatest country in the world” -Pres. Teddy Roosevelt

China “The ‘spheres of influence’ in China will only be available to us for so long. A rebellion has left China in a state if disarray and other countries have taken advantage of the situation. Britain has their share, France has their share. It is our turn to take our share” -Washington Post 1910
