2 Design Technology Year 8 Extended Homework Activity Sustainable Furniture Outline of the Project By the end of this project, you will… Know and be able to name individual designers and design periods Understand the developments in chair design Begin to understand sustainable issues Be able to demonstrate your understanding through the tasks you will be given across 6 weeks Use inspiration to allow for opportunities for creativity in your designing

3 Week 1 Your task this week is to gather some research on designers/design periods What do I need to do? You produce an item of research based around a designer/design period as identified and illustrate trends/designs/features of the design period using images and text to support. How do I present my work? You can do this in any way you want. It can be in the form of a presentation (using PowerPoint), A word document, a news article, a poster or even a script for a radio show!) Remember, your teacher will be looking for good quality research using your own words. If you are writing it by hand and drawing, remember to keep this work presentable. Credit will go towards 3D research! What information do I need to include? You must research 1 designer OR design period from the following: Art Neuveu Bauhaus Post Modernism Phillipe Stark Marcel Breuer Philippe Starck Verner Panton You can then either email your work to your teacher at Or print off and give to your teacher next lesson

4 Week 2 Using the internet, you will be understanding design periods and reasons for change. What do I need to do? You will use the design museum online exhibition and create you own timeline for the development of chairs selecting 1 chair from each era (total of 11 chairs from lat 1800's to 2000) that you feel inspired by. Use this website to assist your research A century of chairs: http://designmuseum.org/exhibitions/online/a-century- of-chairs How do I present my work? You will present the work as a final piece on a separate sheet. Credit will be awarded for use of ICT and creativity in design of the timeline. You will also need to make sure work is presented neatly and coloured in and labelled well. What information do I need to include? On your timeline, you will need to include the following Each of the era’s (Dates i.e 2000, 1900…) 1 inspirational chair design of your choosing Information on why you think it is inspirational of it’s era. You can then either email your work to your teacher at OR Or print off and give to your teacher next lesson

5 Week 3 Your task this week is to identify your recycling habits and things that you throw away What do I need to do? You will complete a tally chart showing the things that they throw away in your general waste across 5 days. Look at the following website to help you to understand the reasons behind recycling. http://www.recycling-guide.org.uk How do I present my work? This is a data collection task so information must be recorded on the next page neatly (the original chart can be left by your bin at home to record before copying out in the booklet) What information do I need to include? Use the table to collect information about materials, quantities of rubbish, what is already recycled. You must then write a short paragraph to show what you have learnt from this weeks task You can then either email your work to your teacher at Or print off and give to your teacher next lesson

7 Week 4 Your task this week is to begin to develop your final product using all of the information you have gained in the last few homework tasks. What do I need to do? Create 3 design ideas for chairs. You must first redesign some of the following success criteria below for your needs as a designer. The chair must be a model version of a possible manufactured chair The chair should be influenced by the designer/design period you researched in week 1 (________________) The chair must be made from recycled materials The chair must be structural sound for someone to be supported (if made full size) The chair must be…. The chair could be…. The chair should be… How do I present my work? You must present your ideas using good colouring techniques and analysis. Show why you have come up with your ideas and what has inspired you as a designer? Demonstrate your understanding of using recycled materials by explaining what your final chair will be made from. The page must be filled with ideas and there should be no blank space on the page!
